Narrative Text On 12/05/2007 at 1437 hrs, Tukwila Fire Units (Ladder 54, Engine 52, Aid 54, Battalion
51, and Fire Marshal 51) with Automatic Aid units (Engine 11, Engine 24, and Engine
191) were dispatched to 12870 Interurban Ave S for a smell of natural gas inside a
business.
On arrival Ladder 54 detected an odor similar to natural gas/propane exhaust. An air
monitor detected readings of Carbon Monoxide throughout the tenant space of 10 - 30
ppm. Investigation identified a roof mounted HVAC unit with damage to a heat exchanger
(thus allowing CO into the business space). Unit was shut down, the space aired out, and
then released to the occupant with instructions to have the HVAC unit repaired before it is
used again.
A worker had been on the roof changing air filters and may have dislodged some dust or
other material that was detected as a gas odor.
