We were on a pre -fire drill at the Cascade parking garage at the Mall when we smelled an
odor of some kind of chemical. On further investigation we found a 5 inch long stalagmite
from the ceiling near the NE stair tower on the second floor. It was dripping onto the
sidewalk and had left a 2' in diameter spill that had appeared to have evaporated.
We called Mall security who called Mall management and they both showed up at the spill
location. We covered the spill with 1 bag of Amerizorb. The material on the ground had
already solidified. I requested B-51 to bring the Hazmat ID machine from the hazmat
apparatus. I took a sample of the liquid dripping from the ceiling ant tested it in the
Hazmat ID machine. It said it was water.
I told the management to get a hold of the construction company that is working on the
mall to see if they could figure out why this material was leaking from the ceiling. I told
the Mall mamager that he is responsible for cleaning up the spill and that he needs a spill
clean up company to do this.
We returned in service.
