Author Assignment 1
Narrative Text Diesel fuel from a semi -truck accident (incident #0801916) on I-5 was found entering the
Duwamish River at this location, about 1/2 mile from the accident location, via a storm
drain outfall. FM51 located the spill due to the odor of diesel in the air and seeing a sheen
on the river surface for about 1/2 mile downstream. B51 surveyed the scene and found a
fast flowing and high river due to recent mountain snowmelt combined with the current
tide. E52 was requested to pick up 30' of booms from Station 51 and transport to the
location and attempt placement. E52 decided due to the water conditions and steep brushy
bank the safe solution was to place booms inside the outfall pipe supported by the outfall
grate. This seemed to be effective as the visible flow of fuel into the river was
immediately stopped, and water continued out.
Agencies contacted: Washington Department of Ecology (Donna), who then contacted the
Coast Guard, EPA (one rep drove to the scene), and WSDOT (Paul Krueger) who denied
any responsibility. Two Coast Guard reps drove to the scene and were escorted by Trng
51, who also took command after B51 left the scene.
Coast Guard took the lead for clean-up and contacted Global Diving and Salvage, contact
person Kristofer Lindberg, 206-623-0621. Clean up is to occur on 5/27/08.
The spill was about 150 gallons of diesel fuel from a semi -truck accident in which the two
saddle tanks were fully torn open. The truck owner was A&P Transport, 7900 Hoskin
Street, Delta, BC V4G1M4. Their insurance is BC Insurance, policy #DCID248140335,
phone number 604-443-4450. Also involved in the truck operation was Orbit Logistics,
Inc., Jim Omdal, 27232 72 Ave. S, Kent, WA, 98032, 253-520-4050.
