She asked if I knew anything about it, or if our units would normally respond to something like that. I informed her we certainly would. I got all the information she had about the incident and told her I would be going over to investigate. Since the actual spill occured over an hour ago, my objective was to just go over to investigate, and ensure that the proper containment and clean up were in place. I arrived Page: 2 Printed: 06/10/2008 17:44:29 Incident Report 2008-0802146 -000 Tukwila Fire Department Narratives and found a clean up contractor, (NRC) was already on site, with a vac truck and a full crew already cleaning up. A cover was over the storm drain with absorbents all around it. There was only minor amounts on the ground in the form of a sheen on the wet concrete. No visible puddles were present. I spoke with Mr. John Micheal, from United Rental. He informed we of what had happened, what he did about it and where they were in the clean up process. He informed me he followed their "protocall" to notify the NRC, and his companies contact for a spill of this sort. I notified our Surface Water Supervisor to assist us with determining where the ourfall was for these drains. I also insisted on finding our how much hydraulic fluid had spilled. We were told initially it was 20 gallons. But further investigation found that the unit that had the problem only had a five gallon hydraulic tank in it... so no more that five gallons could have spilled. This was consistent with what we saw in the storm drains, underground pipes and on the surface in the surrounding area. The vac truck was able to suck up the small amount that was in the drain. They also flushed the pipe from an adjoining drain, and determined the spill to be cleaned up. After seeing that all the proper agencies were notified, and that the clean up crew was reputable and doing a good job, I turned the scene over to the contractor and property owner. No fluid was found outside the perimeter of the back parking lot storm drains, where the initial incident occured.
