At 1800 hours on Monday June 23, 2008 we were dispatched to an oil or other
combustible liquid spill. Five units were assigned to this incident. Ten personnel
responded. We arrived on scene at 1806 hours and cleared at 1949 hours. The incident
occurred at 5400 I-405 Fwy S, TUKWILA in District 004. The local station is 52. The
general description of this property is highway or divided highway. The primary task(s)
performed at the scene by responding personnel were to identify and analyze hazardous
materials. No mutual/automatic aid was given or received.
Alarm number 0802360 has been assigned to this incident.
MSO 1 was first to arrive and give initial sizeup and location
Upon arrival of E-51 and E-52 found a single axle tractor with a set of doubles that had
jack-knifed and was now blocking across the ramp from I-405 southbound to I-5
southbound. The tractor was jacknifed tight to the left with the drivers corner of the cab
being crushed and the left hand fuel tank had been punctured and was flowing diesel.
Placed a portable collection pool under the leak and then used plug and dike to stop the
leak in the fuel tank. Amerisorb was spread on the fuel running across the roadway and
the grass -dirt area in the median was checked for fuel. Found a puddle of ten gallons or so
that was being absorbed into the ground. Shut off the ignition and headlights in the tractor.
The crossover fuel line was able to be shut off with a valve on the right hand tank.
E-51 had established initial command until arrival of B-51.
E-53 was called to bring Utility 51 with the air pump and an overpack drum.
E-53 arrived with Utility 51 and the remaining fuel from the left tank was pumped into the
recovery drum (approx 30 gallons). All equipment was picked up. Airport Tow was
onlocation and pulled the tractor and trailers around so that they could be towed off the
ramp and out of the way. DOT crew had been on location for traffic control and spill
assist. They spread out a little more absorbant and determined it was OK to open up
traffic once the truck was out of the way.
The recovered fuel was taken to station 51. The owner of the company, Genothen, told his
driver that they would come by in a couple days to retrieve the recovered diesel.
