Three units were assigned to this incident. Eleven personnel responded. We arrived on scene at 1206 hours and cleared at 1249 hours. The incident occurred at 12900 48 Ave S, Tukwila in District 001. The local station is 53. The general description of this property is street. The primary task(s) performed at the scene by responding personnel was investigation. Other special hoz mat actions were also taken. No mutual/automatic aid was given or received. Alarm number 0803683 has been assigned to this incident. This call was dipatched as a possible vehicle fire on the back of a flatbed. It was actually a 2,0001b. battery that tipped over due to a bad pallet it was sitting on. The battery is used for a forklift and it ended up arcing on the positive wire creating some sparks. The arcing stopped once the cable was pulled off by the driver. When L54 arrived, the battery was still on its side and was leaking battery acid out of the air vents. There was no way to control the leaks since there were probably 40-50 vents leaking out. The dirver of the truck only had oil-absorbant pads on board which were providing a dam but not absorbing any acid. I requested E51 to be added and bring all of the acid absorbing pads we had from station 51 and sent two of my crew members to the Hertz Equipment Rental which happen to be right next to the incident to fmd out if they could send a forklift out with an operator. They quickly sent out a forklift and operator who was able to place the battery right-side-up on a new pallet. FF Custer showed up in the meantime with several absorbant pads for acid which were used to soak up all of the acid on the truck and the ground. The driver of the truck estimated a total of 5 gallons spilled and he took all of the pads with him to dispose of them properly. There was no furthur action and L54 returned in service.
