Rodal, William Author Rank FFI Author Assignment 1 Narrative Text At 1803 hours on Wednesday October 8, 2008 we were dispatched to a gas leak. Nine units were assigned to this incident. Eleven personnel responded. We arrived on scene at 1808 hours and cleared at 1929 hours. The incident occurred at 10710 E Marginal Way S, Tukwila in District 008. The local station is 53. The general description of this property is vacant lot. Automatic aid was received on this incident. Alarm number 0803886 has been assigned to this incident. I was the Acting Captain on E-53. We were first in. Traveling Northbound on E. Marginal Way S. As we approached the scene we could see the workers to the east of the fire about 50' they were waving us in. I could see the fire in a small trench just south and west of the address approximately 25'. There was a generator approximately 10' from the fire. I established 107th Command and located the command post @ E-53. We laid a precautionary 1 3/4" line to protect the exposures. I also called for PSE. I approached the workers onsite and they advised me that they were fixing a water line when the gas line ignited. Myself and 3rd on E-53 retrieved several Map gas bottles, which were in harms way. There were three bottles around the edges of the trench and one inside with a torch head on it still burning. We also retrieved a cell phone. Next to arrive was Batt 51 I tied in with Batt 51 and he took over command. I tried to obtain the location of a foot valve to shut the gas off but I was unable to locate. The workers advised me that PSE had been out earlier in the day and fixed the gas line. The gas line was 1/2". It appeared to me that the gas line was anywhere from 3" to 12" from were they had been trying to fix the water line. Approximately 10 to 15 minutes into the incident, one of the workers approached me and stated that two of them were in the trench when the gas line ignited both received singed hair. Both workers were evaluated by A-54. I was told that both workers denied any serious injuries and did not want to go to the Hospital. Page: 5 Printed: 10/09/2008 08:19:52 Incident Report 2008-0803886 -000 Tukwila Fire Department Narratives We stood by until PSE arrived @ 1845. They clamped the gas line, which extinguished the fire. E-53 third retrieved a saws all from the trench. PSE met with the workers and it appeared that there was a disagreement on how the line was damaged/melted or if it had been leaking. The workers were using Map gas to solder the water line.
