Narrative Text At 1401 hrs Seatac Fire was dispatched to an aid call possibly involving some kind of
hazardous spill at Tyee High School in building #200. Students and a few staff members
called 911 to complain of irritating symptoms. B45 was command and reported up to 35
green patients.
B51 was added to the call to handle the investigation of a possible hazardous materials
release that caused the symptoms. On arrival B51 tied in with B45 for the incident action
plan and current conditions. B45 stated that King County Sheriff Officers and many Seatac

Firefighters had been inside building #200 and reported no odor or irritating side effects.
B51 then assured that all personnel were out of the incident building #200 and it was
secured from entry. A request was made by B51 to B45 to operate under the original call
and create a Haz-Mat Group or Branch. B45 again requested that a separate incident be
created for the Haz-Mat part of the original call.
B45 created a second incident and B51 established 188st. Command. Lt. Howell from the
Port of Seattle who is a Hazardous Materials Technician was made Operations for this
incident. The Port of Seattle hazardous materials unit 777 was brought to the scene with 3
additional technicians and 1 operations level member.
B51 interviewed the school teacher of the science lab to determine if any chemicals from
her room could be involved. She stated all chemicals were secure and none of them could
be the problem. The original odor came from the common hall running outside her
classroom, not in it.
E712 with a 4 person team, 2 as entry & 2 as back-up with full PPE & SCBA entered
building #200 to recon and monitor the atmosphere. They were instructed to also look for
any suspicious items that could have caused the odor. An APD 2000 and two AFT 4 gas
detectors were used during the recon. They were instructed by Command if at any time
they had a positive reading or found something of suspicion, they would pull out of the
building and a full hazardous materials response would be initiated. All monitoring
showed zero readings and no suspicious items could be found. All locked rooms & closets
were unlocked and checked by the recon team. No positive fmdings of any type or hazard
could be found.
Building #200 was then ventilated by using natural horizontal ventilation through the
outside doors and main hall.
B51 reported the building clear and tied in with B45. B51 turned the fmdings of recon
over to B45 and released the scene back to B45. B51 terminated 188th command and
returned to Tukwila.
