Narrative Text We responded to a report of an odor in a warehouse. En route the short report stated that
there were 6 people feeling sick and that they had evacuated the building. I adder 2 more
fire apparatus and a BC. On our arrival we found a 200' by 1000' concrete tilt -up structure
that had been evacuated. I quickly interviewed the ill occupants. They all complained of
being dizzy but now feel better now that they are outside. None of them wanted to go to
the hospital. I asked them where in the building each one of them worked and if they
smelled anything. They all worked in different parts of the warehouse and had not smelled
anything. They told me that the symptoms started the previous shift and tonight was worse.
I established Cascade Command. E-51 remaining crew did air monitoring in the building.
E-76 did air monitoring in the building and E-52 did medical. B-51 arrived and assumed
Cascade Command and I remained at the Command Post. We received reports from E-51
that there was l Oppm of CO in the south end of the warehouse near the battery charging
station for the forklifts. We advised them there may be a gas water heater in that area. E-51
came back out for a ladder to get access to the water heater. I read the peak readings on the
air monitor. They were l Oppm on the CO. I zeroed out the meter and E-51 went back to
the water heater. E-51 found l Oppm in the area but no defmite source for the CO. E-51
exited the building. E-76 also exited the building and said they toured the entire warehouse
and came up with 2ppm of CO and found no defmite source of CO.
Two of the employees were sent to the hospital by POV to be checked out. E-52 returned

in service. E-76 returned in service. We for PSE to respond to the scene. After taking a
break E-51 returned to the building to check out a water heater in the front office. There
were no readings in the office area. PSE arrived and went in with E-51 to the south end of
the building. When they came out PSE said the water heaters were electric and the gas
heaters in the ceiling were all off. He did state that the forklift batteries were giving him
CO readings on his meter. We found out later that Hydrogen from the batteries will cause
readings in CO detectors.
We advised the owner that he should remove the forklift batteries from the building and
ventilate for another half hour before resuming operations. We also stated that we could
not fmd a definite source of the CO readings and that he might want to hire a industrial
hygienist to investigate further. We returned in service.
The next day E-51 followed up by using acid gasses Gastec chlorometric tubes. We found
no acid gasses in the one battery that was charging. They said they placed all spare
batteries outside and that one of them looked like it was damaged. They also stated that an
industrial hygienist would be there to inspect and they were going to get an new forklift
service. One that has rapid charging batteries.
