Automatic aid was received on this incident. Alarm number 1000317 has been assigned to this incident. Dispatched to the smell of natural gas inside the post office at 225 Andover Pk. W. Responding units included E51, E52, E54, B51, L14, and A14. Page: 4 Printed: 01/28/2010 00:13:00 Incident Report 2010-1000317 -000 Tukwila Fire Department Narratives B51 was first on scene and drove a 360. Upon seeing the gas valve, B51 secured that shut. E51 was second on scene and was directed to check inside the structure. Immediately upon entering the doors to the public mailboxes, our air monitor alarmed as it was getting a reading of 450 ppm, with a high of 600 ppm carbon monoxide. There was no odor of natural gas. E52 was directed to side C to establish ventilation and force entry. A padlock was cut on a set of double doors that provided access and a good entrance for ventilation. With the extremely high CO, we suspected a faulty furnace. B51 requested a sub. Ventilation provided immediate results in lowering the CO content. Renton units were released with these results. Ms. Everett arrived and was unable to locate keys to open up a locked door on the exterior to the furnace area. She left and later returned with the keys. A further check of the CO levels found only trace to zero levels throughout the building. We advised her that the furnace needed repairs/inspections and that the gas supply was locked out. We left her to secure the building.
