The primary task(s) performed at the scene by responding personnel was investigation. No mutual/automatic aid was given or received. Alarm number 1000816 has been assigned to this incident. E-53 was dispatched to the report of a propane odor inside of a business with employees not feeling ill. Upon arrival at the location found that there was a 500 gallon propane tank next door at Suburban Propane, 12642 Interurban Av S, with an open valve and releasing pressure. Went to Suburban Propane to find out why the propane tank was being bled off. The manager was not in but found two employees that assisted. Found that most of the propane tanks in the yard are old and out of service. These tanks are technically empty but do have a residual amount of pressure, small amounts of propane, and a lot of smell from the mercaptin that is in propane. Over the years the mercaptan collects in a small amount of oily residue at the bottom of the tank. The amount of residue may be small but the odor is still very potent. With the gusty winds today and the residual pressure being released the mercaptan odor was blown directly next door and collected in the 12646 business office. The tank had ceased to off pressure but the employees at Suburban were advised that their actions were affecting their neighbors. Had B-51 bring over a micro -max to check for a flammable reading. No readings were found. There is definitely an odor of mercaptan that is not pleasant. Employees report that this is not the first time for this problem and that it has been so strong in the past that it caused employees to have headaches. With the strong wind today we opened the rear and front doors and a good cross ventilation was clearing out the odor. r, .. E-53 in service- out of quarters.
