At 0934 hours on Saturday July 10, 2010 we were dispatched to a gasoline or other
flammable liquid spill. Two units were assigned to this incident. Three personnel
responded. We arrived on scene at 0938 hours and cleared at 0955 hours. The incident
occurred at 14620 Tukwila Intl Blvd, Tukwila in District 011. The local station is 54. The
general description of this property is service station, gas station. The primary task(s)
performed at the scene by responding personnel was investigation. Automatic aid was
received on this incident.
Alarm number 1002361 has been assigned to this incident.
L54 responded to a flammable liquids spill at a gas station. L54 and B51 arrived on
location and found a small gas spill in front of a pump that had a torn fill hose. Per the last
customer to use the pump, Shristi Prakash, she said that as her son was filling the car and
gas spilled out of the handle area of the hose. The manager Singh Ajmer told Prakash that
she should have not used the pump since it was broken. Prakash stated that there was not a
bag over the pump or any signs that said the pump was not to be used. Ajmer stated that
the customer attempted to fill her car while he was going to get the signs. Ajmer failed to
put turn the pump off prior to leaving the area, which allowed Prakash to fill her car with a
torn fill hose.
The cause of the torn fill hose was from a driver that drove away with the gas fill hose
attached to the car. The breakaway quick connects failed to release, which caused the fill
hose to tear. L54 confirmed that the pumps were off, applied absorbent pads to the oil
separator drain and swept the absorbent material around, which the manager had applied.
The pump showed a total of 1.918 gallons had been pumped. The manager told L54 that
NW Pumps had already been called and were on their way to the scene. L54 and B51
cleared the call and returned in service.
