Narrative Text At 2239 hours on Monday April 18, 2011 we were dispatched to a gas leak. Six units were
assigned to this incident. Ten personnel responded. We arrived on scene at 2246 hours and
cleared at 2330 hours. The incident occurred at 16038 W Valley Hwy, Tukwila in District
005. The local station is 51. The general description of this property is hotel/motel,
commercial. The primary task(s) performed at the scene by responding personnel was
investigation. Automatic aid was received on this incident.
Alarm number 1101275 has been assigned to this incident.
E51 to respond to a natural gas leak inside the Marriot Hotel. Employees reported
smelling it in the lobby and dining area. The hotel is not evacuating.
On arrival to a 50X200 8 story hotel to find nothing showing and it is not evacuated. E51
made contact with the dining room manager and she explained where she smelled the gas.
She had shut off the gas to the fireplace in the lobby prior to our arrival. She said the
smell was strongest from the kitchen area and moved into the lobby.
E51 investigated the dining area with a gas detector and had no readings. The smell was
strongest in the buffet area near a griddle cook top with two side burners. The pilot light
to the burners was lit and the griddle was warm. The dining room manager said the griddle
should not have been on, but if it was then it was probably on since this morning. The
kitchen behind the buffet had no odor, but the two doors into that area were closed.

E51 made contact with Marriot command and was directed to shut the gas off to the
griddle. The front desk contacted the building engineer and had him proceed to the hotel.
The odor in the dining area quickly subside with a side door opened and E51 assisted E52
with ventilation of the dining area. No cause for the odor was found but the smell was
isolated to the griddle.
A71 crew assisted with the investigation with a gas monitor and checked the lobby and the
second floor directly above the dining area. Nothing was found and A71 returned to the
command post.
E51 made contact with the building engineer and explained what was found and the steps
taken to mitigate the gas leak. We told him that PSE would be here in about 15 minutes
and they could help him with further investigation into the cause for the odor.
All units available.
