At 0814 hours on Friday June 17, 2011 we were dispatched to a gas leak. Seven units were
assigned to this incident. Ten personnel responded. We arrived on scene at 0823 hours and
cleared at 0846 hours. The incident occurred at 17672 Southcenter Pky, Tukwila in
District 006. The local station is 51. The general description of this property is general
retail. The primary task(s) performed at the scene by responding personnel was
investigation. Other special hoz mat actions were also taken. Automatic aid was received
on this incident.
E51 found that the overhead heater unit in the back store room had been turned on for the
second time in years. E51 found that the system had just been worked on the week before,
when the heater was turned on for the first time in many years. E51 advised the store
manager to shut the unit down until it has been serviced. After the store manager told me
about the history of the heater unit, it sounds like the auto igniter is not working to light the
gas, so the gas valve shuts. The NG is then smelt by the employees in the back stock room.
E51 had all the employees that were in the back stock room, complaining of headaches,
step outside into the fresh air for 5 min. before returning to work. The back stock room
was ventilated with natural air by opening the rear roll up door in the stockroom. E51
never received gas readings or alarms from the micromax during monitoring. E51 up dated
Ross Command (B51) of the findings and all units were put in service.
Alarm number 1102033 has been assigned to this incident.
