On our arrival we learned that the odor was inside. We put the air monitor in the first occupancy where there was a slight odor of natural gas. We checked in the concealed space in the ceiling and the entire occupancy and there were no readings. We were told that the restaurant next door has has odor problems in the past. We tried the keys to gain access to the occupancy. We called dispatch to get a subscriber but they had none. We pulled the lock on the front door. We searched the occupanct and had no readings on the air monitor. In the kitchen we did get a reading where the pilot light was out on a large pan burner. They extinguished the pilot light to place a pan with plascic containers in it on the burner. They did not shut off the gas. We shut off the gas and ventilated the building. Two of the employeed showed up. I explained to them what had happened and that we broke their lock to gain access. we returned in service.
