At 2331 hours on Monday June 4, 2012 we were dispatched to a gas leak. Eight units were
assigned to this incident. Eleven personnel responded. We arrived on scene at 2337 hours
and cleared at 0005 hours. The incident occurred at 3600 Southcenter Mall, Tukwila in
District 004. The local station is 51. The general description of this property is general
retail. The primary task(s) performed at the scene by responding personnel was code
enforcement. Automatic aid was received on this incident.
Alarm number 1201999 has been assigned to this incident.
Multiple Tukwila and Renton FD units were dispatched to the smell of natural gas in the
SC Mall. Valley Comm told incoming units that the Mall was not evacuating, and that
there were no medical symptoms from the gas leak.
B51 arrived and established "Mall Command." E51 arrived and investigated. E52 arrived
and assisted with air monitoring.
E51 checked all of the areas (escalators between floors 2 & 3, and the AMC theater lobby)
that the reporting party had said smelled like natural gas, and E51 smelled nothing and got
no readings on the gas detector.
E52 found a natural gas cooktop at "Thai Go" restaurant, in the 2nd floor Food Court.
E52 shut off a gas valve at the cooktop, but the single pilot light that was lit did not go out.
At the cooktop, the smell was almost undetectible.
E51 tied in with Mall Security, telling them to contact the business owner to fix the
problem, and for Security to walk by the occupancy on an hourly basis and to call 911 if
the odor seriously worsened.
TFD and RFD units returned in service.
