Two units were assigned to this incident. Five personnel responded. We arrived on scene at 1205 hours and cleared at 1328 hours. The incident occurred at 18251 CASCADE Ave S, Tukwila in District 006. The local station is 51. The general description of this property is manufacturing, processing. The primary task(s) performed at the scene by responding personnel was investigation. No mutual/automatic aid was given or received. Alarm number 1403278 has been assigned to this incident. E51 dispatched to a odor investigation at 18251 Cascade Ave So, Sayblot LP. The short report was that approximately 3 quarts of Methyl Iso Butyl Ketone (MIBK) were spilled when a bottle broke. B51 added himself to the call. Both units responded from drill at station 54. While en route, we looked up this compound in the ERG hazmat book and found it was a flammable liquid, heavier than air in vapor. Upon arrival, E51 found a medium sized SS CTU that appeared evacuated. I met the manager, Mr. Borman, who told me that a bottle of the MIBK had the bottom broken out and there was an odor throughout the building. I was referred to Mr. Uddin, the technician who was working with the MIBK. We were told where the spill occurred and went in to verify and recon. We laid a precautionary 1 3/4" preconnect. With a 4 person crew, we were able to have 2 in and 2 out. We took air samples and the flammable range never went into alarm (10% LEL). While on SCBA, it showed only 22 ppm. Oxygen was normal as was CO and H2S. We found that respirators are needed at 250 ppm. There was dulling of the floor tile in the lab where the spill occurred. The glass had already been picked up. There was no longer any liquid. We exited and spoke with Mr. Uddin about what happened. He told us he pulled the gallon container out of where it was stored, below the table he was working at, and before he could set it on the counter, the bottom of the brown glass, original container fell out. He quickly used rags to mop up the liquid. He uses this liquid similar to acetone as a solvent. He placed the mainly intact jar in a bin in the flammable liquids room. The rags he used to mop up the spill were placed in a simple plastic garbage bag and placed outside. They were placed in an over pack drum supplied by them for their disposal. We began ventilating the structure beginning with the lab area. We then checked the rest of the building. Only a slight odor and no ppm on the meter. We did a walk through with both gentlemen and they were fine with what little odor was still present. Mr. Borman decided with the potential for some to complain about the odor, he was going to release all his employees for the day. No loss, and no injuries.
