While responding Valley Com advised responding units that a police officer was on location confirming that the Union Pacific railroad trestle over the Black River was fully involved. I requested from Valley Com vta the :police=officer &location which would be the best access Wither from Fort Dent Park or Monster Road. The police officer on location stated that either access would give us an access to the fire. While responding I noticed a large column of dense,bl,ack smoke rising from the west to the east. I then advised E51 that E52 would access from Fort Dent Park and E51 would access from Monster Road. I then requested that E53 and A53 be added to this incident. ;E11 was also requested at this time. 1 directed my driver, Firefighter McCollum, to enter the northwest entrance around the baseball fields. We then went on location as Command 51. We gained access to the railroad right of way be cutting the chain on a locked gate in the northwest corner of Fort Dent Park. I then ordered an 1 3/4" preconnect to the southwest end of the trestle. It was at this time I set up my command post at the south end of the Burlington Northern trestle which was above and to the south of the trestle on fire. While E53 and A53 were enroute I requested manpower from A53 to assist E52 and E53 to lay a 5" reverse from E51's location to the closest hydrant which was 1200 feet away. E51 pulled two 1 3/4" bundles, carried them down hill and supplied them with a 2 I" supply line. E51 attacked the fire from the east. I then requested more police department units as there appeared to be quite a traffic jam and a large spectator crowd had developed. I requested the police department to turn traffic around at Empire Way and at Oaksdale and 68 Av. S.. As Ell approached the incident 1 ordered them to cross the bridge over the Black River and to cut the fire off to the north and attack the fire from the east and west side of the trestle towards the south. Ell did what I requested and Command 11 supervised the attack. I then verified that all train traffic had been stopped north and southbound on the Union Pacific line. Valley Com confirmed. Ell requested a supply line so I had E52 shut down it's attack line and shuttle water for Ell. E52's two attack lines were added to E51 with A53's manpower. It was at this time I requested a fire investigator at the scene. FPO 512 was toned out with no initial response. 1 then requested a King County Fire Investigator. The Department of Ecology was notified because the hose streams were washing creosote from the trestle into the river. Valley Com also notified the Department of Envir- onmental Services. Prior to tap fire Atk.51 was requested for additional air bottles, cascade system and an oil.iabsorbant boom. A tap fire was reported by Command 51 at 1908. When Atk.51 went on location they dropped off fresh air bottles and an oil absorbant boom was placed across the river. The suppression attack teams continued to entinguish hot spots along the trestle until 2152. Units were placed in service on location as they became avail- able -and were returned.
