TUKWILA FIRE DEPARTMENT INCIDENT REPORT NARRATIVE
Date: 08/16/96 Incident: 96-002846-000
Engine 51 dispatched to Kent inplace of Engine 76 for Natural Gas smell
in the area. Upon arrival. we were met bya worker in one of the
businesses who stated he heard what he thought was Natural gas leaking
at the back of the building. A 100' X 250' Single story concrete
tiltup. I asked if everyone was out of the building and he stated
everyone had evacuated like the dispatcher had said.. We went to the
rear of the building and. found that a dumpster had been pushed into a 1
1/2" gas line which.caused a break right below the distribution
manifoldfor a 3 meter set. There was a shut off valve located at grade
level which we secured which stopped the flow of natural gas. B-71.
arrived and gave us his air sampler which we took inside the building
and took readings in the various spaces in the building. We opened
additional doors and windows, until the PPM had gone from a high of
276PPM to under 15PPM at which time B-71 released us from the scene.
Engine 51 returned to quarters.
