TUKWILA FIRE DLPARTMENT INCIDENT REPORT NARRATIVE
Date: 09/17/96 Incident: 96--0032.60-000
This call originated when someone called PD reporting someone was
crawling through. a window into apartment #11. The RP did not report
any chemical problem. When PD entered the apartment, they noticed a
strong chemical odar. They then backed out and called for fire.
Upon our arrival we tied in with PD, getting all info about what they
saw. The information they had did not sound for sure like a drug lab,
and but only an odar. I then sent in a recon team in to see what was
in the apartment, and see if they could find any obvious source for the
odar.
They entered in full bunkers and SCBA. They found a can of tolulene, 2
small containers of murat.ic acid, an empty small container of acetone,
and some other containers: that had liquid that appeared to be water.
They then backed out, and I called department of health to see if they
could come out to do sampling of the air and furniture for dangerous
levels of toxic materials.
I spoke with Mr Jirn Lockey of the Sea. King Co Department of Health.
He said what it sounded like to him was a "nautzie drug lab". He had
me contact the King County Narcotics Division. There I spoke with a
Dick Albersaw. He agreed that it sounded like a drug lab, but referred
us to WSP drug lab team. PD contacted them. They could not come out
until 0900 ori 9-18-96.
We isolated the apartment by evacuating the apartment above and next to
#11. We set up a fan to ventilate the fumes out of the apartment, and
sampled the air for LEL. The reading was "0", with the fan going. We
then placed PD to watch the apartment all night. WSP arrived the next
morning. We called in our off duty haz mat team, and assisted them
with back up and decon.
They entered and took samples. At that point we turned the scene over
to them. We also took pre and post vitals of all who entered suits. No
abnormalities were noted.
