TUKWILA F:RE DEPARTMENT INCIDENT REPORT NARRATIVE
Date: 10/06/96 Incident: 96-003537-000
Dispatched to a gasoline spill caused by a malfunctioning pump station.
Mr. Awine lifted the nozzle from the holder on the pump, turned the
pump on, and before he placed the nozzle into his tank opening, he
squeezed the handle, knowing that fuel should not come out until the
nozzle is inserted into the opening. In this case, fuel came out of the
nozzle, spilling less than one gallon onto the pavement. It looked
like about one fourth of a gallon. He complained to the manager, who
told him it was not the pumps fault.
I took Mr. Morris out and we tested the pump. I turned the pump on,
squeezed the handle, without pulling the collor around the nozzle back,
and fuel came out. I pulled the collar back and the same amount of
fuel came out. It was determined that the dispenser was not operating
properly. I had Mr. Morris tag the pump "out of service" until it can
be looked at by a certified mechanic.
Mr. Morris asked if he should contact his supervisor. I told him that
was based upon his company's policies, and not a public safety issue.
We put some rice hull ash on the spill and turned the property over to
the manager.
