TUKWILA FIRE DEPARTMENT INCIDENT REPORT NARRATIVE
Date: 04/14/98 Incident: 98-001200-000
Engine 53 was asked by Tukwila PD to investigate a pressure vessel
found at a home which might be a part of a meth lab. Engine 53 arrived
and called for a haz mat response. Engine 52, haz mat 52, and chief 53
were dispatched.
Hazmat team member Hickey suggested that we test the substance in the
cylinder. The cylinder was from a hood and duct fire extinguishing
system. The material inside was a purple powder. The label on the
cylinder said that the extinguishing agent was purple K. One member was
put in full protective clothing and a SCBA. We had him put two wet Ph
paper strips in the powder and read the results. The Ph paper read 10.
I tried to find any information on purple K using the haz mat truck
library and computer. I could find no information. I then called
Firesafe Fire & Safety Equipment at 206-622-6265 and talked to Wendy. I
told her of the situation and asked her if they had a MSDS sheet on
purple K which they could fax us. Within 5 minutes we had a copy. The
MSDS sheet stated that the material was mainly potassium bicarbonate.
Which is a moderate base. We based our conclusion that the material in
the vessle was purple K because of the container label, material color,
material texture, and the information in the MSDS sheet.
We called the D.O.E. to get their opinion. They told us that the would
pick it up tomowwrow. Only because the owner might not dispose of it
properly. We then covered the top of the container with plastic and
duct tape, placed it in a heavy yellow plastic bag sealed with duct
tape, and placed it next to fire station 53.
