Dispatched to a gasoline spill at the 7-11 store. A tanker truck was
filling the underground tanks. He stated they ordered 8100 gallons.
It was somehow determined that they did not need more than 7100
gallons. Upon the drivers arrival he took readings from their tank
monitoring equipment. The readings were different from what his dip
readings were. The monitors for unleaded showed 34.32 gal...his dip
reading was 43. The readings for premium were 27.15 on the monitor and
31.5 from the dip. He determined he could deliver 6000 gallons. As he
concluded the delivery, he disconnected the fill hose and aprox. 15
gallons or less poured out. He quickly covered the storm drain and put
absorbant material around the spill. He picked up most of the spill.
A small quantity did enter the storm drain. We pulled the cover off
and put an absorbant pad in the hole. The quantity was not enough to
fill one pad. We then spread some rice hull ash to the ground where
product was on the service. The driver is of the opinion that the
overfill protection system is out of adjustment. He should have had
plenty of room to deliver the 6000 gallons. The overfill shut off the
vent tube too early, not allowing him to deliver that amount.
I am forwarding a copy of this report to Fire Prevention for a follow
up with the store. The store manager on site at the time of the spill
was Tony Hull. The general manager is Linda Yeo. She is usually in the
store between the hours of 0830 and 1600.
