On our arrival, we waited 5 minutes for the police to arrive. When they arrived we advised them to call the EPA. They did and were told that they would call them back. The police called the EPA back after waiting a period of time and were told that the contact person had gone home for the day. Chief Alderson called the EPA and was told that we could sample the chemicals with Ph paper, overpack them and take them to the fire station where they would pick them up in the morning. We suited FF's Rydeen and Hickey in level B suits. This team went to the trunk of the vehicle and identified the chemicals by reading their labels. We segregated these chemicals into two categories. The first group was poisons. The chemicals encountered were 98% to 99% strength. Some were labeled toxic or carcinigenic. The size of each bottle was no bigger than 100 grams but the majority was 20 grams. These were placed in a 1 gallon evidence can filled with rice hull ash and labeled Poison and can number 1. The rest of the chemicals were ph tested if the label was not present and placed in a 1 gallon metal evidence can filled with rice hull ash and labled as can number 2. Can number three had one bottle of nitrogen that we found later in the incident. We noticed a beer can that felt as if it was full, but, there was a bolt protruding from the side of the can and through a hole in the side of the can there appeared to be a solid white substance filling the can. We placed the can at the rear of the car and notified the police that it could be a potential explosive device. The bomb squad was called in. They x-rayed the can and saw that there was a bag like item in the center wrapped with wires. They were going to open the can with a explosive device. When told that if it was a bomb and that the types of poisons we encountered were used in it. It could make a very toxic condition. They decided to x-ray the can once more using a different method. When they did the saw that the contents were jewlry and indian arrowheads. They then opened the can by hand and decided that it was not an explosive device. The fire department transported the chemicals to station 51 and placed them in the apparatus bay. The Lt. at 51's was notified. A list of chemicals in the cans is with the cans and a copy ius attached to this report.
