TUKWILA FIRE DEPARTMENT INCIDENT REPORT NARRATIVE
Date: 05/18/99 Incident: 99-001584-000
Some employees of the Golf course found a 55 gallon drum of an
unknown liquid behind the food service area of the Club House.
This drum was labeled as: Alodine 1201. This product is used for
the treatment of metal parts being chrome plated. ChemTrec was
contacted and a call was placed to the product supplier. MSDS Sheets
were then faxed to us.
The drum was moved from the area that it was first discovered in
and placed in the Golf Course Maintenance area. The drum contained
approx. 1.5 to 2 gallons of a product. A sample was taken of the
liquid. The liguid had the color and odor of Gasoline. The PH of
the product was six (6). With the Haz-Cat kit, response team
members checked the evaporation rate and flammability of the liquid.
It was determined to in fact be Gasoline.
The Maintenance crew was then instructed to transfer the gas to a
smaller can or vessel, then transfer it to either the tank of one
of the City vechicles, or the drums of Gas/Diesel mix already at the
City Shops.

Acute Toxicity:
A: General Product intormadon
No information available for the product. The main routes of occupational exposure to fluoride compounds are
inhalation and ingestion, however, fluorides may be hamnfUI or fatal if absorbed through the skin, based on other
fluoride containing compounds. Exposure to fluoride compounds may result in severe irritation or bums to the
eyes, skin. gastrointestinal system, and respiratory system. Contact with fluoride compounds may not be
immediately evident due to delayed onset of pain following exposure. Systemic effects include salivation,
nausea, abdominal pain. vomiting, diarrhea, nervousness, convulsions, muscle pain. shock, central nervous
system (CNB) dept ion (craziness. weakness, loss of coordination), tachycardia, hypotension, electrolyte
imbalances, muscle weakness, cardiovascular collapse, breathing difficulty, any spm. and loss of
consciousness. Death is usually from respiratory arrest or cardiac failure. Chronic exposure to fluoride
compounds may result in fluorosis characterized by calcification of ligaments and severe bone changes which
result In painful movements, mottling of the teeth, pulmonary fibrosis, anemia, anorexia. and weight loss.
Chromium III, the naturally occurring form, has low toxicity while chromium VI is highly toxic due to strong
oxidation characteristics and permesblQty through biological membra Excessive exposure to dwornIum VI
can produce allergic akin sensitization reactions and severe nasal irritation, scarring and damage to the lungs,
fiver and kidney damage.

Carcinogenicity:
k General Product infornmatimr
No information available for the product. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has found that
there is an eaove risk of lung cancer among workers in the chromate producing industry. POSSIBLE
CANCER HAZARD: There is laboratory evidence that aqueous sodium dichromate administered qtly into the
lung, at the highest tolerated dose. over the lifetime of rats, cis a significantly increased incidence of lung
cancer. It Is expected that if potassium dichromate or chromic acid was tested M this same manner as sodium
dichromate, it would give a similar response,

Thank you for your interest in CHEMTREC the Chemical Emergency Transportation Center. The

The CHEMTREC mission is to provide chemic -specific information to emergency services, and
to assist hazardous materials shippers meet US Department of Transportation (DOT) regulatory
obligations under the Emergency Response Communications Standards.
CHEMTREC began operations in September of 1971, after the DOT had urged CMA to establish
a chemical transportation emergency communications center for emergency responders. In
1980, CMA formalized the unique partnership between industry and government, when CMA
signed a Statement of Formal Recognition and Attendant Understandings with the DOT. The
CHEMTREC Center operates instead of a Congressional mandated, government run, operation.
For a fixed annual fee, shippers and carriers of hazardous materials can register with
CHEMTREC and place CHEMTREC's 24-hour emergency telephone number on shipping papers
and MSDS's. Registrants also receive a quarterly newsletter, which provides the latest regulation
updates and news within CHEMTREC, aooess to a free lending library of audio visual materials,
and hands-on workshops for registrants' emergency responders.
