While returning from another call, we passed the intersection of S
144th and Tukwila International Blvd. As we passed through, we smelled
a strong odar of gasoline. We had already passed by the BP Station at
that intersection, so we had to go around the block and return to the
station. Upon arrival we found an individual pouring some absorbant on
the spill. There was a fuel spill stain from #8 pump, to the storm
drain in the N E corner of the parking lot. I had the crew go
immediatly to the drain and place absorbant pads down. The patron was
a Mr. Robert Hunt (253 471-8890). He stated he put the nozzle in the
tank, set the auto -on device and went into the store to purchase some
items. When he returned, he saw fuel flowing on the ground towards the
storm drain. He shut off the nozzle. He was driving a Geo Metro. He
said he had aprox 1 gallon left in the 10 gallon tank. The pump showed
that 15.399 gallons had been pumped. We determined that aprox 6
gallons had been spilled. We opened the drain and found the water
level was so high that any spill into that drain was long gong down the
system. We placed rice hull ash on the spilled fuel on the ground.
I spoke with the cashier inside. He said he knew there was a spill,
but did not know how much was spilled. The quantity of absorbant they
had was minimul and not nearly enough to absorb the quantity spilled.
I informed our fire marshals office for follow-up with DOT and the
store manager to see that the pump is repaired. Also I had them bag
the nozzle, placing it out of service.
