Strobe options for wall mount models include 1575cd or the Wheelock patented MCW multi -candela wall strobes with field selectable candela settings of 15/30/75/110cd, or the high intensity MCWH strobe with field selectable 135/185cd. Ceiling mount models incorporate Wheelock's patented MCC multi -candela ceiling strobe with field selectable intensities of 15/30/75/95cd or the high intensity MCCH strobe with field selectable 115/177cd. The audible provides a selectable choice of either a continuous horn or temporal pattern (Code 3) when constant voltage from a Fire Alarm Panel (FACP) is applied. Each tone has 3 dBA settings to choose from. When used with the Wheelock Series SM,DSM Sync Modules, Wheelock Power Supplies or other manufacturers panels incorporating the Wheelock Patented Sync Protocol, synchronization of the continuous horn tone provides the temporal (code 3) tone (mandated by NFPA 72) simultaneously for all audible appliances. This ensures a distinct temporal (code 3) pattern when 2 or more audibles are within hearing distance. If not synchronized the temporal sound could overlap and not be distinctive. At the same time the strobes will be synchronized. This provides the ability to comply with ADA guidelines concerning photosensitive epilepsy and the NFPA standards when installing 2 or more visual appliances within the field of view all of this plus the ability to silence the audible is achieved by using only 2 wire. Wheelock's synchronized strobes offer an easy way to comply with ADA recommendations concerning photosensitive epilepsy as well as meeting the requirements of NFPA 72. The Wheelock Series RSS Strobes employ a Patented Integral Strobe Mounting Plate that can be mounted to a single gang, double gang, 4" square, 100mm European backboxes or the SHBB surface backbox. If the flush backbox has side or top space between it and the finished wall, the NATP (Notification Appliance Trimplate) may be used. It provides an additional .65" of trim for the Appliance. An attractive cover plate is provided for a clean, finished appearance on all models. The Series RSSP Multi -Candela Strobe Plates are a cost effective way to retrofit required wall strobe appliances to bells, horns, chimes, multitones or speakers and easily mounts to standard 4" backboxes or for surface mount use with the Wheelock SBL2 surface backbox. With the sprinkler held horizontally, a small air bubble should be present. The diameter of the air bubble is approximately 1/16 inch (1,6 mm) for the 135"F/57°C to 3/32 inch (2,4 mm) for the 360°F/182°C temperature ratings. A 1/2 inch NPT sprinkler joint should be obtained with a minimum to maxi- mum torque of 7 to 14 ft.lbs. (9,5 to 19,0 Nm). A 3/4 inch NPT sprinkler joint should be obtained with a mini- mum to maximum torque of 10 to 20 ft.lbs. (13,4 to 26,8 Nm). Higher levels of torque may distort the sprinkler inlet and cause leakage or impairment of the sprinkler. Do not attempt to make-up for insuffi- cient adjustment in the escutcheon plate by under- or over -tightening the 'TFP151 Page 7 of 8 sprinkler. Readjust the position of the sprinkler fitting to suit. The Series TY -B Pendent and Up- right Sprinklers must be installed in accordance with the following instruc- tions. Step 1. Pendent sprinklers are to be installed in the pendent position, and upright sprinklers are to be installed in the upright position. Step 2. With pipe thread sealant ap- plied to the pipe threads, hand tighten the sprinkler into the sprinkler fitting. Step 3. Tighten the sprinkler into the sprinkler fitting using only the W -Type 6 Sprinkler Wrench (Ref. Figure 7), except that an 8 or 10 inch adjustable Crescent wrench is to be used for wax coated sprinklers. With reference to Figures 1, 2, 3, and 4 the W -Type 7 Sprinkler Wrench or the adjustable Crescent wrench, as applicable is to be applied to the wrench flats. When installing wax coated sprinklers with the adjustable Crescent wrench, additional care needs to be exercised to prevent damage to the wax coating on the sprinkler wrench flats or frame arms and, consequently, exposure of bare metal to the corrosive environ- ment. The jaws of the wrench should be opened sufficiently wide to pass over the wrench flats without damag- ing the wax coating. Before wrench tightening the sprinkler, the jaws of the wrench are to be adjusted to just con- tact the sprinkler wrench flats. After wrench tightening the sprinkler, loosen the wrench jaws before removing the wrench. After installation, the sprinkler wrench flats and frame arms must be in- spected and the wax coating re- touched (repaired) whenever the coat- ing has been damaged and bare metal is exposed. The wax coating on the wrench flats can be retouched by gen- tly applying a heated 1/8 inch diameter steel rod to the areas of wax that have been damaged, to smooth it back over areas where bare metal is exposed. NOTES Only retouching of the wax coating ap- plied to the wrench flats and frame arms is permitted, and the retouching is to be performed only at the time of the initial sprinkler installation. The steel rod should be heated only to the point at which it can begin to melt the wax, and appropriate precautions need to be taken, when handling the heated rod, in order to prevent the installer from being burned. The Series TY -B Recessed Pendent Sprinklers must be installed in ac- cordance with the following instruc- tions. Step A. After installing the Style 10 or 40 Mounting Plate, as applicable, over the sprinkler threads and with pipe thread sealant applied to the pipe threads, hand tighten the sprinkler into the sprinkler fitting. Step B. Tighten the sprinkler into the sprinkler fitting using only the W -Type 7 Recessed Sprinkler Wrench (Ref. Figure 8). With reference to Figure 3 or 4, the W -Type 7 Recessed Sprinkler Wrench is to be applied to the sprinkler wrench flats. Step C. After the ceiling has been in- stalled or the finish coat has been ap- plied, slide on the Style 10 or 40 Clo- sure over the Series TY -B Sprinkler and push the Closure over the Mount- ing Plate until its flange comes in con- tact with the ceiling. Care and Maintenance The Series TY -B Sprinklers must be maintained and serviced in accord- ance with the following instructions: NOTES Before closing a fire protection system main control valve for maintenance work on the fire protection system that it controls, permission to shut down the affected fire protection system must be obtained from the proper authorities and all personnel who may be affected by this action must be notified. The owner must assure that the sprin- klers are not used for hanging of any objects; otherwise, non -operation in the event of a fire or inadvertent opera- tion may result. Absence of an escutcheon, which is used to cover a clearance hole, may delay the time to sprinkler operation in a fire situation. Sprinklers that are found to be leaking or exhibiting visible signs of corrosion must be replaced. Automatic sprinklers must never be painted, plated, coated or otherwise altered after leaving the factory. Modi- fied sprinklers must be replaced. Sprinklers that have been exposed to corrosive products of combustion, but have not operated, should be replaced if they cannot be completely cleaned by wiping the sprinkler with a cloth or by brushing it with a soft bristle brush. Care must be exercised to avoid dam- age to the sprinklers - before, during, and after installation. Sprinklers dam- aged by dropping, striking, wrench twist/slippage, or the like, must be re- placed. Also, replace any sprinkler that has a cracked bulb or that has lost liquid from its bulb. (Ref. Installation Section). Frequent visual inspections are rec- ommended to be initially performed for corrosion resistant coated sprinklers, after the installation has been com- pleted, to verify the integrity of the cor- rosion resistant coating. Thereafter, annual inspections per NFPA 25 should suffice; however, instead of in- specting from the floor level, a random sampling of close-up visual inspec- tions should be made, so as to better determine the exact sprinkler condi- tion and the long term integrity of the corrosion resistant coating, as it may be affected by the corrosive conditions present. The owner is responsible for the in- spection, testing, and maintenance of their fire protection system and de- vices in compliance with this docu- ment, as well as with the applicable standards of the National Fire Protec- tion Association (e.g., NFPA 25), in addition to the standards of any other authorities having jurisdiction. The in- stalling contractor or sprinkler manu- facturer should be contacted relative to any questions. Automatic sprinkler systems should be inspected, tested, and maintained by a qualified Inspection Service in ac- cordance with local requirements and/or national codes. • Page 8 of 8 P/N 57 -XXX -X -XXX I MODEUSIN 530 2.8K UPRIGHT (1/2"NPT) TY1151 531 2.8K PENDENT (1/2"NPT) TY1251 570 5.6K UPRIGHT (1/2"NPT) TY3151 571 5.6K PENDENT (1/2"NPT) TY3251 590 8.0K UPRIGHT (3/4"NPT) TY4151 591 8.0K PENDENT (3/4"NPT) TY4251 560 8.0K UPRIGHT (1/2"NPT) TY4851 561 8.0K PENDENT (1/2"NPT) TY4951 SPRINKLER NATURAL BRASS 4 WHITE POLYESTER 3 WHITE (RAL9010) * 9 CHROME PLATED 7 LEAD COATED 6 WAX COATED 286°F/141°C MAX. 8 WAX OVER LEAD 286°F/141°C MAX. Figure 1) in the Inlet of the Sprinkler. The glass Bulb con- tains a fluid that expands when ex- posed to heat. When the rated tem- perature is reached, the fluid expands sufficiently to shatter the glass Bulb, and the Bulb Seat is released. The compressed Spring is then able to ex- pand and push the Water Tube as well as the Guide Tube outward. This ac- tion simultaneously pulls inward on the Yoke, withdrawing the Plug & Belleville Seal from the Inlet allowing the sprin- kler to activate and flow water. Design Criteria The Tyco® Series DS -1 Sprinklers are intended for use in fire sprinkler sys- tems designed in accordance with the standard installation rules recognized by the applicable Listing or Approval agency (e.g., UL Listing is based on NFPA 13 requirements). The 1 inch NPT Series DS -1 Sprin- klers are to be installed in the 1 inch NPT outlet or run of malleable or duc- tile iron threaded tee fittings that meet the dimensional requirements of ANSI B16.3 (Class 150) or cast iron threaded tee fittings that meet the dimension- al requirements of ANSI B16.4 (Class 125). The Series DS -1 Sprinklers may also be installed in the 1 inch NPT out- let of a Grinnell Figure 730 Mechani- cal Tee; however, the use of the Figure 730 for this arrangement is limited to wet pipe systems. Typically, the end sprinkler fitting on a branch line is plugged as shown in Figures 3 through 11. The DS -1 Sprin- klers cannot be installed into an elbow fitting. For wet pipe systems, the sprinkler drop may be installed as shown in Fig- ure 12. The configuration in Figure 12 may only be used where the sprinkler fitting and water filled pipe above the sprinkler fitting is not subject to freez- ing and where the length of the DS -1 Sprinkler has the minimum exposure length per Figure 14. For wet pipe systems, the DS -1 Sprin- klers may also be installed in the fol- lowing Tyco® CPVC fittings: (P/N 80145) 1" x 1" NPT Female Adapter or (P/N 80249) 1" x 1" x 1" NPT Sprinkler Head Adapter Tee. For dry pipe systems, only use the side outlet of maximum 2-1/2 inch size TFP500 Page 5 of 8 reducing tee's when locating the DS - 1 Sprinklers directly below the branch line. Otherwise, use the configuration shown in Figure 13 to assure complete drainage of water from above the DS -1 Sprinklers and the branch line. NOTE Do not install the Series DS -1 into any other type fitting without first consult- ing the Technical Services Depart- ment. Failure to use the appropriate fitting may result in: failure of the sprin- kler to properly operate due to forma- tion of ice over the inlet Plug or bind- ing of the inlet Plug; or, insufficient engagement of the inlet pipe threads with consequent leakage. Branch, cross, and feedmain piping connected to Dry Sprinklers and sub- ject to freezing temperatures must be pitched for drainage in accordance with the minimum requirements of the National Fire Protection Association for dry pipe sprinkler systems. When Dry Sprinklers are to be used in wet pipe sprinkler systems protect- ing areas subject to freezing tempera- tures (e.g., sprinkler drops into freez- ers), consideration must be given to the appropriate length of the sprinkler that will prevent freezing of the water in the connecting pipes due to conduc- tion. When the temperature surround- ing the wet pipe sprinkler system is maintained at a minimum temperature of 40°F/4°C, the following are the mini- mum recommended lengths between the face of the sprinkler fitting and the outside surface of the protected area (i.e., length exposed to minimum am- bient of 40°F/4°C — Ref. Figure 14): • 12 inches (300 mm) when the tem- perature within the protected area is -20°F/ -29°C • 18 inches (450 mm) when the tem- perature within the protected area is -40°F/ -40°C • 24 inches (600 mm) when the tem- perature within the protected area is -60°F/ -51°C For protected area temperatures be- tween those given above, the minimum recommended length from the face of the fitting to the outside of the protect- ed area may be determined by interpo- lating between the indicated values. The 2007 edition of NFPA 13, Sec- tion 8.4.10.2 requires that dry sprin- klers connected to wet pipe sprinkler systems protecting insulated freezer structures have the clearance space around the sprinkler barrel be sealed. The use of the Model DSB-2 Dry Sprinkler Boot described in Technical Data Sheet TFP591, and illustrated in Figures 15 and 16, will meet the intent of NFPA 13. Refer to the Design Criteria section for other important requirements regard- ing piping design and sealing of the clearance space around the Sprinkler Casing. Do not install any bulb type sprinkler if the bulb is cracked or there is a loss of liquid from the bulb. With the sprinkler held horizontally, a small air bubble should be present. The diameter of the air bubble is approximately 1/16 inch (1,6 mm) for the 135°F/57°C rating to 1/8 inch (3,2 mm) for the 360°F/182°C rating. A 1 inch NPT sprinkler joint should be obtained with a minimum to maximum torque of 20 to 30 ft. lbs. (26,8 to 40,2 Nm). Higher levels of torque may dis- tort the sprinkler inlet with consequent leakage or impairment of the sprinkler. Do not attempt to compensate for in- sufficient adjustment in an Escutcheon Plate by under- or over -tightening the Sprinkler. Readjust the position of the sprinkler fitting to suit. Step 1. Pendent sprinklers must be installed only in the pendent position, and upright sprinklers must be in- stalled only in the upright position. The deflector of a pendent or upright sprin- kler is to be parallel to the ceiling. Horizontal sidewall sprinklers are to be installed in the horizontal position with their centerline of waterway perpen- dicular to the back wall and parallel to the ceiling. The word "TOP" on the De- flector is to face towards the ceiling. Step 2. With pipe thread sealant ap- plied to the inlet threads, hand tighten the sprinkler into the sprinkler fitting. Step 3. Wrench tighten the sprinkler by wrenching on the Casing with a pipe wrench whenever the casing is readily accessible. Otherwise, use a W -Type 7 Sprinkler Wrench (Ref. Figure 2). The wrench recess of the W -Type 7 is to be applied to the sprinkler wrench flats (Ref. Figure 2). Step 4. After the ceiling/wall has been installed/finished, slide on the outer - piece of the Escutcheon until it comes in contact with the ceiling/wall. Do not lift the ceiling panel out of its normal position. In the case of the outer piece of the Deep Escutcheon, hold the outer piece in contact with the mounting surface (ceiling), and then rotate the inner piece approximately 1/4 turn with respect to the outer piece, to hold the Deep Escutcheon firmly together. Care and Maintenance The Tyco® Series DS -1 Dry Type Sprin- klers must be maintained and ser- viced in accordance with the following instructions: NOTES Absence of the outer piece of an es- cutcheon, which is used to cover a clearance hole, may delay the time to sprinkler operation in a fire situation. Before closing a fire protection sys- tem main control valve for mainte- nance work on the fire protection sys- tem that it controls, permission to shut down the affected fire protection sys- tems must be obtained from the prop- er authorities and all personnel who may be affected by this action must be notified. A Vent Hole is provided in the Bulb Seat (Ref. Figure 1) to indicate if the Dry Sprinkler is remaining dry. Evi- dence of leakage from the Vent Hole is an indication that there may be weep- age past the Inlet seal and that the sprinkler needs to be removed for de- termining the cause of leakage (e.g. an improper installation or an ice plug). The fire protection system control valve must be closed and the system drained before removing the sprinkler. Sprinklers that are found to be leaking or exhibiting visible signs of corrosion must be replaced. Automatic sprinklers must never be painted, plated, coated, or other- wise altered after leaving the factory. Modified sprinklers must be replaced. Sprinklers that have been exposed to corrosive products of combustion, but have not operated, should be com- pletely cleaned by wiping the sprin- kler with a cloth or by brushing it with a soft bristle brush. Care must be exercised to avoid dam- age - before, during, and after instal- lation. Sprinklers damaged by drop- ping, striking, wrench twist/slippage, or the like, must be replaced. Also, re- place any sprinkler that has a cracked bulb or that has lost liquid from its bulb (Ref. Installation Section). The owner is responsible for the in- spection, testing, and maintenance of their fire protection system and devices in compliance with this document, as well as with the applicable standards of the National Fire Protection Associ- ation (e.g., NFPA 25), in addition to the standards of any other authorities hav- ing jurisdiction. The installing contrac- tor or sprinkler manufacturer should be contacted relative to any questions. Automatic sprinkler systems should be inspected, tested, and maintained by a qualified Inspection Service in accor- dance with local requirements and/or national codes.
