Industrial Revolution is a provider products used in back country camping and emergency survival. Among these products they provide area specialized matches, storage containers, lantern candles, lanterns, stoves and solid fuel pellets. They receive matches and pellets from their supplier on pallets and ship small quantities according to the customer's orders. The amounts of palletized flammable solids stored on pallets will exceed the exempt amount permitted. Flammable Solid Storage Room Sprinkler Densities and Commodities There are four things stored in the room, wood pallets, plastic pallets, matches, and fuel pellets encapsulated in plastic packaging. The matches and pellets are stored in cartons; the pellets packages themselves within the cartoons are encapsulated in plastic. The facility that they will be stored in has an ESFR Sprinkler system with K14 heads with 75 psi pressure as required by NFPA 13 with the underside of the roof deck over 35 feet but under 40 feet. Storage height within the building is limited to 30 feet based on the clearance distance required between the sprinkler head and the product. With this sprinkler density and head type storage of Class IV commodities and Group A plastic are permitted to be stored in racks without solid shelving to height of 35 feet as long as 36 inches of clearance is provide to the heads per NFPA Table 16.3.3.1 and 17.3.3.1 respectively if K14 heads are provided with 75 psi of pressure. Plastic and wood pallets are also permitted to be stored with this system to a height of 30 feet on pallets according to NFPA Table 12.12.2.1 and 12.12.2 (c) respectively if K14 heads are provided with 75 psi of pressure. These materials are listed under NFPA 13 Table A.5.6.3 as Group A plastics. The palletized materials will be stored on open racks to a maximum height of 25 feet. Prior to placing the pallets in the room shrink wrapping will be removed. The initial estimated amount of matches to be stored on pallets totals 12,240 lbs. This represents 18 pallets with 20 cartoons per pallet. The initial estimated amount of fuel pellets to be stored on pallets totals 9,600 lbs. This represents 8 pallets with 20 cartoons per pallet. Storage Room Requirements Chapter 3 of the 2009 IBC lists Flammable Solid storage in section [H} 307.5 as High -Hazard, Group H-3 occupancy. Where amounts of those materials exceed 250 lbs, the limits given in [F] Table 307.1(1), they must be stored in a separate room that is constructed to meet the requirement of an H-3 occupancy group. Special lighting, ventilation, fire suppression and containment requirements may be needed based on other provisions of the code. Storage of this type of flammable solids within an H-3 storage room is a some what unique situation because there are no fumes that represent a health, physical, or explosion hazard and the product when exposed to water becomes non combustible. Lighting and Electrical Lighting in the warehouse is currently T-8 fluorescent system that is circuited to the panel. The fixtures themselves since there are no flammable vapors will function satisfactory in this environment as long as the storage use in restricted to flammable solids. These fixtures however should be re -circuited so they can be shut off from a switch next to the entry of the room. Ventilation and Air Quality Mechanical ventilation for fumes is not required however since it is an interior room with no outside air source work place ventilation will be needed. The International Mechanical Code (IMC) Table 403.3 for storage uses requires a rate of 1 cfm/square foot of floor area. Our recommendation is to install a roof mounted exhaust fan that would operate during business hours at a central location. Fire Suppression System The existing building has a fire suppression system that meets the NFPA 13 standards for storage of flammable solids. Modification or additional protection systems are not need, however a fire extinguisher station is required inside the room next to the entry point. Traditionally H-3 storage rooms have secondary containment for the fire suppression system because health hazards, physical hazards, flammables and combustibles can mix with and contaminate the sprinkler discharge water. The fire resistance rating of those walls is provided in IBC TABLE 508.4. The required rating of the separation wall between the general warehouse occupancy (S-1) and the flammable storage room (H-3) is one hour. Openings in the separation wall are required to be protected by self or automatically closing door upon signal upon detection of smoke. These doors should be a minimum of a 1 hour listed assembly.
