The following items were taken into consideration with this approval: • Based on the information you provided to the Fire Marshal's Office, there is sufficient water supply for the sprinkler system demands without the assistance of the Fire Department pumping apparatus. • NFPA 14 and the International Building Code require Class 1 Automatic Wet Standpipes only in "Highrise" buildings and not "Midrise" buildings. Based on the submitted plans, this building is not a highrise building since the highest occupied floor is under 75ft. It is also understood that you are designing the building to have a Class 1 wet standpipe. • The same variance was granted for a very similar project by the previous Fire Marshal, BC Don Tomaso on 2/14/2018. • The original requirement for needing fire pumps was due to Tukwila Municipal Code 16.42.060, which is more restrictive than other codes by requiring all standpipes to be Class 1 Automatic Wet, when standpipes are required. This requirement is not found in NFPA, the International Building Code or the International Fire Code. Since the ordinance change has been in effect, Tukwila has not required similar "Midrise" buildings to install Fire Pumps to support a Class 1 Automatic Wet standpipe. • Fire suppression activities would not take place without Fire Trucks connected to the FDC and pumping into it. Standard operational procedures for this structure are for the first two pumpers to go to the FDC and increase pressure to the sprinkler system and standpipes by pumping through the FDC. • The supplied documentation actually shows the calculated remote area with a pressure of 105.151 PST and 250 GPM discharge and two discharges flowing simultaneously.
