Drop-in Anchor 2. Spring Clip Ceiling Plate (optional) 3. Hanger Rod 4. Adjustable Hanger Ring Application / Description No. 12 Hangers are designed to support piping under smooth or flat concrete slab construction. They utilize an anchor that is set flush in a hole predrilled in the concrete, then expanded against the sides of the hole with an internal plug. NFPA 13 terms this type of fastener an "expansion shield". In "Automatic's" data, however, the manufac- turer's nomenclature is used. It is called a drop-in anchor. There are 3 components in a basic No. 12 Hanger: The drop-in anchor, a threaded rod and an adjustable hanger ring. The rod may be either all thread rod (ATR) or ma- chine thread rod (MTR). All thread rod is considered to be standard, however. As a rule, machine thread rod is pro- vided only when it is a specific requirement of the job specifications. As an option, the hanger may be furnished with a spring clip ceiling plate when a more finished -appearance is needed in an area. NFPA Requirements / Limitations NFPA 13 has specific requirements and/or limitations 1/22 for the use of expansion shields (drop-in anchors) when they are installed in the vertical position. The standard reads: . . In concrete having gravel or crushed stone aggregate, expansion shields may be used in the vertical position to support pipe 4" or less in dia- meter. For the support of pipes 5" and larger, expansion Shields if used in the vertical position shall a/ternate with hangers connected directly to the structural members such as trusses and girders, or. to. the sides of concrete beams. In the absence .of convenient structural members, pipes 5" and larger may be sup- ported entirely by expansion shields in the vertical position, but spaced not more than 10 ft (3 m) apart. Expansion shields shall not be used in ceilings of gypsum or similar soft material. In cinder concrete, expansion shields shall not be used except on 'branch lines where they shall alternate with through bolts or hangers attached to beams. ri UNICONE CREPES KIOSK 2800 Southcenter Mall, Space + .K..0738 Tukwila, WA CROWN FIRE.
