Tuesday, April 16, 2019 To: City of Tukwila Fire Department Attn: Fire Plans Examiner- Al Metzler Project: U -Haul 2925 S 112th ST Correction letter # 1 response; 1) The previous use of this building was offices. It is assumed the existing fire sprinkler density throughout is light hazard as would be appropriate for the use and approved under King County as the building was later annexed into the City of Tukwila. The proposed use of the building is now for storage. Provide a technical report from a Washington State Licensed Fire Protection Engineer (FPE) which addresses the adequacy of the existing fire sprinkler system to protect the proposed use and what, if any modification would be required. After review of the As -built drawings it is noted that the existing system in the proposed space was designed to meet a pipe scheduled Ordinary Hazard occupancy. A scanned copy of the As -built drawings are attached for reference. I have clouded the page indicating the design criteria. Max spacing on the existing sprinkler heads is less 130sq ft. The proposed layout would require minimal changes to the existing system, to include but not limited to; relocating sprinlders once walls are removed to insure spacing requirements. Based on the information provided regarding the U -Haul facility this would be miscellaneous storage of class I through class IV commodities up to 12ft in height. The design curve would be OH2 .20 GPM/ 1500 SQ FT. CORRECTION LTR# b19oz3? The design drawings are scanned as -built drawings from the original installation, which was a pipe schedule wet system with a maximum sprinler head spacing of 130 square feet. The original design was for an Ordinary Hazard protection level. The design drawings and hydraulic calculations provided show that the system design does meet the criteria for a hydraulically designed Ordinary Hazard Group II wet pipe fire sprinkler system. Based on this, NFPA 13 (2013 and 2016) Table 13,2,1 (Discharge Criteria for Miscellaneous Storage Up to 12 feet (3.7 m) in Height) allows for solid -piled, palletized, bin box, shelf, rack, and back-to-back shelf storage of Class I through Class IV commodities up to 12 foot in height.
