The building is an S -1/B occupancy and is considered MB construction.
The space is currently used for high piled storage. Two sections of existing rack are being
removed and replaced with new multiple row rack to improve efficiency.
Existing Sprinklers:
The building is protected by an existing wet pipe fire sprinkler system. The risers for the
overhead and the existing in -rack sprinklers are located along the north wall at approximately
grid line A 7.5 on the Engineered Products drawings. The existing risers are equipped with
existing water flow and tamper switches and exterior water motor gong.
Outside the north wall across the fire Zane/access driveway are an existing PIV with tamper
switch and existing FDC (downturned Storz).
Fire Alarm:
The existing fire alarm consists of monitored water flow and tamper switches, manual pull
stations at exit doors and horn/strobes at the roof/ceiling. No modifications to the existing
system are necessary based on the new proposed racks.
Commodities:
Based on the information provided for our review, the products proposed for storage include
hardwood flooring in cardboard cartons, carpet tile with polyurethane backing, and Vinyl
Composite Tile.
The worst-case commodity classification will be the carpet tile classified as a Group A plastic.
The carpet tile will be stored cartoned (in cardboard cartons); therefore, the commodity class will
be cartoned, unexpanded Group A plastic for the purposes of this report.
Commodities are not encapsulated.
Shaw/Spectra TI 17620 West Valley Hwy Tukwila, WA

The Fire Protection International Consortium, Inc. November 30, 2018
Racks:
The materials will be stored on multiple row racks with no solid shelves to a maximum height of
21' — 7 3/16" per the drawings provided by Engineered Products.
Aisles between the racks exceed 8 feet in width.
The are 4 tiers of storage in the racks.
Flues:
Racks will need to have minimum 6 -inch transverse flue spaces at rack uprights and between
loads per CFC Tele 320.8.3 OpXiorl 1. No lon.gitplippi Nes we.fegglfed.
The push back racks use a rail and cart system. The rails and carts are open framed and do not
create solid shelves. With typical pallets on the rails/carts the required flues can be left open.
Shelves:
No shelf storage is proposed.
Fire Sprinkler Desiqn Criteria — New Racks:
1) 21' — 7 3/16" storage height proposed
2) Height to underside of roof/ceiling is over 25ft but less than 30ft
3) Multiple Row Rack
4) No solid shelves
Shaw/Spectra TI
3
17620 West Valley Hwy Tukwila, WA
The Fire Protection International Consortium, Inc. November 30, 2018
5) Cartoned, unexpanded Group A plastic commodity
6) Aisles exceed 8ft in width
Per NFPA 13, Section 17.2.1.2.1 use Figure 17.2.1.2.1(e) for required design criteria.
From Figure 17.2.1.2.1(e), a minimum of 0.30gpm/2,000sf is required at the roof system
plus two levels of in -rack sprinklers following the pattern in the figure.
A minimum of 18" clearance is required between top of storage and fire sprinkler deflectors at
the roof. Actual clearance is 36" or more and is therefore acceptable.
Smoke and Heat Removal:
With a high piled storage area of 13,875sf and a maximum roof height of 26ft the required
smoke vent area is 13,875 x 26/9000= 40sf. There are 6 existing 4'x8' smoke vents in the
space, 5 of which are over the high piled storage area. 5 vents x 32sf each = 160sf. Therefore,
the required vent area is provided. Curtain boards are not required per Chapter 32 of the IFC.
Access:
This is an existing, warehouse with an existing, fire lane looping the building. No additional fire
apparatus access is required based on installation of the proposed new racks.
Fire fighter access doors are required per IFC Chapter 32, Section 3206.1.1.
The east and west walls are interior tenant walls, no access doors required.
The north wall into the high piled storage area is 120ft long with two existing doors
spaced at 91ft in accordance with 3206.1.1.
The south wall into the existing high piled storage area is 60ft long and has ,one
existing swinging door which opens into a short interior hallway with a door into the
storage area. In accordance with the exception to 3206.1.1 this is acceptable.
If more information is needed, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
Carl Anderson, PE

Jack Pace, Director
This letter is to inform you of corrections that must be addressed before your development permit can be approved. All
correction requests from each department must be addressed at the same time and reflected on your drawings. I have
enclosed comments from the following departments:
FIRE DEPARTMENT: Al Metzler at 206-971-8718 if you have questions regarding these comments.
• Due to the complex nature of this manner of rack storage and the types of commodities involved, provide a
technical report from a State of Washington licensed Fire Protection Engineer addressing the required fire
protection per NFPA 13 and High -Piled Combustible Storage requirements of International Fire Code Chapter 32.
Please address the comments above in an itemized format with applicable revised plans, specifications, and/or other
documentation. The City requires that two (2) sets of revised plan pages, specifications and/or other documentation be
resubmitted with the appropriate revision block.
In order to better expedite your resubmittal, a 'Revision Submittal Sheet' must accompany every resubmittal. I have
enclosed one for your convenience. Corrections/revisions must be made in person and will not be accepted through the mail
or by a messenger service.
Sincerely,
Bill Rambo

Scope of Work
1.) Scope:
This calculation reviews the installation of the pallet racks shown on drawing G1282
for structural adequacy. The sealing of the drawings is for the structural review of the new rack
components only. All other information is not reviewed, nor approved by GKM & Associates. All
racks are checked as free standing structures anchored to existing floor slab. Existing concrete slab
to be reviewed by others. Existing concrete slab assumed to have the following properties for
determining anchoring requirements:
fc = 4000 psi minimum compressive strength
Thickness = 6 in. minimum
2.) Analysis:
Members are designed using LRFD & the direct analysis method. Seismic forces are computed
using the equivalent lateral force method in accordance with RMI at a period computed using FEMA
460. Second order effects are considered by adding a stability moment demand to the column
check for dead + live Toad & dead, live & seismic loading conditions.
3.) Codes:
2015 International Building Code
ASCE/ANSI 7
AISI/ANSI S100
RMI/ANSI MH16.1

W = Rack + (2/3)Contents per ASCE 7 & RMI MH16.1
0.042W < VL = 0.089 W / T < 0.159W
0.042W < VL = 0.133 W / T < 0.239W

Determine Period - FEMA 460 Appendix A
N 2
T1 = 2n.
Wip
9(NC(,e)+Nb(kc+kb))
For a rack with a constant load per level and spacing between beams:
N = number of levels
Wpi =W
h = spacing between levels
If the height of the pallet is conservatively ignored, then:
h.pi = ih
And recalling that:
N 1 i2 = 6 (N) (N + 1) (2N + 1)
Simplifies the basic equation to the following expression:
T1=2n
NW h2 ((N)(N+1)(2N+1)j
t 6
rr kckbe kckbe
Nc\kc+kb) Nblkc+kbQ
For a long row of rack, the interior posts dominate the response:
Nc=2N Nb=1
And using the FEMA 460 (and RMI) assumption:
k=b=k
2
Allows a further simplification to:
T1 = 2
W h2N2 (N+1)(2N+1)

RE: Correction Letter # 1
DEVELOPMENT Permit Application Number D18-0320
SHAW INDUSTRIES INC - 17620 WEST VALLEY PARKWAY
Dear THOMAS BOROWSKI,
Allan Ekberg, Mayor
Sincerely,
Bill Rambo
