August 1, 2013

Meeting was called to order at 5:15 p.m.
OLD BUSINESS
The minutes from the May 2nd and June 6th meetings were reviewed and approved. Moved by Joan
Hernandez, seconded by Brenna Arnesen with minor modifications.
NEW BUSINESS
Joan shared that a few of our renewal appointments are coming up at the Monday, August 5 City
Council meeting. It would be good for those being reappointed to attend if possible. It is a good
opportunity to share with Council, the work you do for the Commission.
Mary shared that on Tuesday, August 6, there are several Night Out Against Crime neighborhood events.
All are invited to attend. If folks can participate, it would be a great opportunity to spend some time
with residents, and we look forward to hearing any updates at the September meeting.
Aaron shared thank you notes and cards created by elementary summer school students who received
the books we collected in the May book drive. The notes and messages reflect the positive impact this
committee initiative had on students and literacy in Tukwila. Aaron will bring the notes to his
reappointment meeting with Council on August 5. He will also bring them to the September meeting so
absent commissioners can see them.
We began the discussion of what our table might include at the Tukwila Cultural and Heritage event at
Foster High School in September. We will finish the planning at our September meeting. Mary liked the
idea of asking others what their talents are and what resources they need.
