HomeMy WebLinkAboutEquityDiversity 2013-02-07 MinutesEQUITY AND DIVERSITY MEETING MINUTES February 7, 2013 Present: Joan Hernandez, Aaron Draganov, Mary Hulvey, Kathleen Gantz, Charlie Penor, Brenna Arnesen, Nate Robinson Absent: Mellody Matthes, Verna Seal Staff: Mary Hulvey (sitting in for Joyce Trantina) Meeting was called to order at 5:15 p.m. OLD BUSINESS The minutes from the January 3, 2013 meeting were reviewed and approved with one minor change. NEW BUSINESS Nate Robinson was welcomed as the new member of the Equity and Diversity Commission. Nate indicated he looks forward to being part of the group. Joan Hernandez represented the group in thanking Brenna Arnesen for her facilitation as Commission Chair for the past two years, and she was presented with a copy of the book, "Kiss, Bow or Shake Hands" as a thank you from the City in providing excellent leadership for the group. ELECTIONS Joan Hernandez briefed the group regardingthe Military Road/Sesquincentennial meeting. The Tukwila Historical Society will co-sponsorthe June 8th event. All members will be invited/encouraged to attend, and she will provide details as the date approaches. Brenna shared that March 23rd is the Outreach for Business Conference and announced that she would be attending (as well as a couple of other Commission members). Nate inquired about the status of our budget and what set expenses we have. The 2013-2014 budget is the same as the previous years. Nate suggested that the Commission consider reaching out to other community organizational groups for educational purposes, just to learn about what is available, what is currently being done, and consider inviting different community organizations to make presentations at our meetings. The Police Explorers presented a photo -card to the Commission, showcasing their experience. They shared that the trip was a historical learning experience because it involved a road trip through part of Equity/Diversity Minutes February 7, 2013 Page 2 the country. They shared the positive impact our financial grant had on the group, since 12 members were allowed to attend and no one was excluded. They enjoyed competing among Explorer Posts from various parts of the country, and extended an invitation for members to attend their Wednesday meetings and see them in action. We provided them with a brochure, and asked for their continued support in Diversity activities in our community. Meeting adjourned at 6:10 p.m. NEXT MEETING MARCH 7, 2013
