OLD BUSINESS
The minutes from the May 2, 2013 meeting were deferred to the July meeting.
NEW BUSINESS
During the month of May, 2013, the Equity and Diversity Commission sponsored a book drive, aimed at
collecting as many new or lightly used books for Tukwila elementary school students. Collection bins
were placed at City buildings, the South King CountyChamberoffice, the School District Admin. building,
the Rainier Cancer Center, the Cultural Heritage Museum, and Sea -Tac Airport Administration bldg.
Almost 500 books were collected and given to the school district for distribution to the kids, as a way to
encourage reading over the summer.
The group shared a light meal, and placed stickers inside the books: "This book was collected through
the Equity and Diversity Commission book drive, May, 2013".
Some Commissioner terms will expire July 31, 2013: Verna Seal, Joan Hernandez, Kathleen Gantz, Nate
Robinson, and Aaron Draganov. Verna, Joan and Nate have indicated their willingness to serve for an
additional two-year term. Joyce will get in touch with Aaron and Kathleen, and hopefully they will
consider a re -appointment to the Commission as well.
NEW BUSINESS
Nate shared that the Teen Festival is going to take place on June 18th from 11:30 to 3:00 at the
Showalter football field. He thought the Commission may want to consider having a table, and after
discussion, it was decided that it would be beneficial to have a presence there, as a way to connect with
the students. The group felt it would be good to give away water bottles, which can be purchased at
Costco. They expect 400-500 kids in attendance.
The group also discussed having a booth at the Cultural Fair, which will be on a Friday (versus Saturday)
September 20th, 3:00— 7:00 p.m. at Foster High School
The group also discussed the fact that the Metropolitan Pool District has vacancies, and this might be a
great opportunity to engage some of our ethnically diverse residents in Board/Commission work.
Nate indicated that the Commission might want to consider having someone from One America make a
presentation at an upcoming meeting, and he has a contact that could help with this.
Meeting adjourned at 6:20 p.m.
