APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Minutes from the Sept. 5, 2013 meeting were approved with minor modifications (moved by
Mellody Matthes — seconded by Joan Hernandez).
NEW BUSINESS
Kerin Brasch, Executive Director of Girls on the Run, provided slides and an overview of the program and
how this program positively affects Tukwila female students (and others). The Commissioners will be
asked to consider a grant application in the amount of $2,145 for this program.
This program is very important to many of the girls in Tukwila schools, and they are very appreciative of
the opportunity to participate in the program. These young women are respectful, very fun and full of
life. They also have volunteercoaches in the program, and they have one Dad in the group, training to
be a coach. His daughter had been thru the program, and wanted her Dad to be part of the program.
Girls on the Run got involved in our schools thru Community Schools Collaboration (this is an after
school program). The progam runs for 10 weeks in the fall, and then 10 weeks in the spring. They serve
about 1,200 girls a year (across 42 schools). It's about girls and inactivity — better health and exercise.
Coaches are volunteers and high school juniors/seniors (targeted). For student coaches, this is an
excellent activity that can be used to help achieve scholarships. Girls are also assigned a running buddy
("buddies" sign up for the practice 5K) and then helps her student get across the finish line at
"graduation".
The program targets girls 3rd thru 5th grades and includes a class curriculum. Fees are covered thru a
sliding scale (based on no. of people in family/annual income). Highest fee is $165, lowest fee is $20.
Average fee paid in spring, 2013 for non- CSC participant is $90, CSC participant is zero.

The board is going to try to develop long and short term solutions to funding issues. (Tukwila and
Highline Districts).
Costs to run the program for Tukwila students is around $11K per "semester". Mellody shared that
there is data supporting the health and other benefits of the program to Tukwila students. Most
families in the district can't afford any financial help to provide assistance. Any grant funding received
from the Commission will be used for Tukwila students and will cover the costs of 13 girls participating.
Commissioners thanked Kerin for her presentation, and she left the meeting.
The Commission discussed the grant application from Girls on the Run and based on their discussion,
the Commissioners present, voted unanimously to approve the full grant amount of $2,145. Joyce will
process the grant check and get it to Girls on the Run. Mellody volunteered to follow up with Kerin and
let her know her grant application request has been approved.
OLD BUSINESS
Nate is working to have someone from One America make a presentation at a future Equity and
Diversity meeting. The commission would like to learn more about One America.
The group discussed the idea of focusing on community needs early in the year (Jan. — April) via our own
networks and connections in the community, so that use of budget funds can be planned further out,
and dispursed throughout the year.
Joan asked if there was a way that the Commission could sponsor showing a video regarding Latinos in
America. Joyce will work with Parks and Rec. staff to learn more about the video and try to show it at a
future meeting.
Meeting adjourned at 6:20 p.m.
NEXT MEETING - NOVEMBER 7, 2013
