OLD BUSINESS
The minutes from the July 2, 2012 meeting were approved with one minor change: Motion to adopt by
by Joan Hernandez, seconded by Charlie Penor.
Joyce advised the group that the magnets will be ready for the September 22 cultural event. The group
discussed assignments for Sept. 22. The event runs 4:00 — 8:00 p.m. at Foster High School.
The group decided to purchase pencils (Dollar Store) forthe kids who visit the booth. Mary may also be
able to provide something for the kids. The magnets will be available in the booth, along with Equity
and Diversity brochures. Our Human Services Dept. may also want to provide materials that can be
distributed to folks at the event, and are more than welcome to utilize booth space, or spend time with
us.
Joyce will provide a very large map of the City ("Put a Pin Where You Live") and Aaron's class will make a
very large world map ("Put a Pin Where You are From"). This should be a lot of fun for folks who visit

NEW BUSINESS
The group is uncertain as to whether or not Carolyn will continue any involvement in the Commission.
Joyce will contact Nate Robinson to determine if he would be interested in completing an application for
a more permanent role on the commission.
The group was also asked to consider a role as Chair or Vice Chair for the upcoming year.
Joyce shared some background information regardingthe Strategic Plan, and how the information we've
learned so far, from our residents and businesses, will help inform the biennium budget process which is
currently underway. The Equity and Diversity budget for the upcoming budget was submitted showing
no change for the upcoming two years, or $3,257 per year. Joyce submitted a rough draft of goals for
the Commission for the biennium, and the group felt the draft goals were clear and concise, and
provided a good summary of the priority areas for the Commission. Members will be given until end of
day Monday, Sept. 10th to provide Joyce with any further changes.
Verna shared information with the group about the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, as prepared
by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. This recent change provides an opportunity for certain
people who meetvery specific criteria, to be considered for deferred action (no deportation, able to get
a Social Security card, employment authorization card, etc.). It does not provide a path to a green card
or citizenship at this time. There are workshops available to help get the correct information out to the
public. Documentation is very important, legal experts are still working on many of the details, etc.
there needs to be clarity at the school level and Verna volunteered to meet with school reps. or others
who might like more information.
Verna will send the link to Kathleen and Mellody so it can be shared via the school district's website —
we may also want to consider posting information on the City's website. Verna will get in touch with
Kathleen and talk about how to communicate the info.
Joyce will make copies of the information to have available at the Cultural Fair booth.
Stacy Hansen thanked the Commission members for their grant earlier in the year, which provided
translation services forthe Community Access Guide update. It was suggested that we consider linking
the update to the Equity and Diversity web page on the City's website. We should also consider a link
from the School District's website to the Human Services Dept. on the City's website.
Meeting adjourned at 6:20 p.m.
