HomeMy WebLinkAboutEquityDiversity 2010-04-01 MinutesEQUITY & DIVERSITY COMMISSION Meeting Minutes - 5:15 p.m. — Tukwila City Hall Conference Room #3 April 1, 2010 PRESENT Commissioners: Falicia Green; Chair, Brenna Arnesen, Joan Hernandez and Carolyn Barge Staff: Don Lincoln The meeting was called to order at 5:15 p.m. APPROVAL OF MINUTES No Minutes Available SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS No Special Presentations. OLD BUSINESS No old business. NEW BUSINESS Regional Meeting — March 31, 2010 Chair, Falicia Green, reported on her attendance at the Joint Regional Meeting of the Civil & Human Rights Commission held at Seattle City Hall on March 31, 2010. Commission members attending represented Seattle Human Rights Commission, King County Civil Rights Commission, Federal Way Human Rights Commission, Auburn Diversity Commission, and Tukwila Equity & Diversity Commission. Mayor McGinn spoke and provided an update regarding current city activities: Youth & Family Initiative, Minority Owned Business Assistance, Energy Assistance, and Long-term Neighborhood Planning. Commissions provided reports and updates on activities they are sponsoring or participating in: • Seattle is creating out -reach cards for the homeless listing services available and are looking for ways to partner with other commissions to ;provide public health care for the homeless. • Federal Way is planning a farmer's market activity where they share cultural food and city services with residents. • Auburn is planning to provide classes on how to stretch a food budget. There were several requests and opportunities for joint projects: 1. It was requested that all commissions put their commission web page site link on the Seattle Human Rights Page. 2. Seattle asked if we would like to partner with them to work on health needs for homeless to provide skilled nursing care. 3. Snohomish County is seeking support to start a Commission. 4. Commissions were encouraged to attend Seattle Race Conference on 8/20/10 at South Seattle Community College. Citizenship Day — April 17, 2010 Citizenship Day will be held on Saturday, April 17 at the Foster -Tukwila Presbyterian Church. Brenna had volunteered last year, and Commission Members are welcome to drop in if they were available to attend that day. Joan mentioned that she appreciates the Commission helping to sponsor the event. CITIZEN COMMENTS Assistant Police Chief, Don Lincoln, was welcomed to the meeting and asked to provide comments. He agreed to return to another meeting to make a presentation on his work with the Somali Community in Tukwila. STAFF REPORT No report. Equity & Diversity Commission Minutes April 1, 2010 — Page 2 OTHER ITEMS Commission Member Hernandez distributed a brochure about the New Hope Health Center being opened in Tukwila. More information can be found at www.newhopeh.org. She also distributed a list of cultural holidays for the year printed by the Ethnic Heritage Council. Falicia, Carolyn and Joan attended the Living Voices presentation at MOHAI and heard the live presentation by Fumika. Joan also attended the TRC potluck at Showalter Middle School.
