Tukwila, Washington 98188 The attached plans have been Accepted as meeting requirements for classification as a sprinklered risk. The following revisions or additions to the design as shown would qualify the protection for improved rates based upon information shown on these plans: Arrangements should be made to allow a representative of this Bureau to complete a cover inspection of all piping before it is concealed by building construction, and to witness tests of the local water motor alarm and sprinkler supply test pipe. Completed copies of the Contractor's Material and Test Certificates for both the overhead and underground piping should be submitted to this Bureau. All piping, valves, and fittings should be listed and labeled by UL for fire service and installed, tested, and flushed in accordance with NFPA standards. Wet pipe sprinkler equipment is acceptable subject to provision of a thermostatically controlled heating system capable of maintaining temperatures at not less than 40 degrees F in all spaces containing wet pipe sprinkler equipment. 1. Proposed design of .15 gpm per sq. ft over 5,000 sq.ft. is acceptable for automobile repair and minor storage of parts. System design should be reinforced to adequately protect the increased hazards if there is any deviation from the occupancy such as the use of flammable liquids, rack storage, and storage over 12 ft. in height, etc. 2. Revise design area to include the paint shop plus 20 feet out on all sides with 90 sq. ft. maximum spacing and a full stagger. 3. Provide complete hanger details. 4. Drains should be provided for all trapped piping in dry pipe system as specified in Article 3- 6.3.3 of NFPA 13 (1989). Provide gang drains for multiple trapped branch lines. 5. Operation of dry pipe system to be in accordance with Article 5-2.3.1 and exceptions of NFPA 13, such that water reaches the inspectors test within 60 seconds after it is opened. 6. Replace sidewall sprinklers in tire storage area with standard upright sprinklers. 7. The use of sidewall sprinklers in normal situations is discouraged. If sidewall sprinklers are used, they must be specifically listed for use in ordinary hazard occupancies and the spacing should not exceed 10 ft. between sprinklers with maximum throw across the rooms of 15 ft. Spacing should not exceed 80 sq. ft. per sidewall sprinkler, and their use should be made under smooth ceiling construction only. 8. Recommend design of system be revised to ordinary hazard pipe schedule, sized for one area above and below the ceiling, or provide written certification that a fire rated ceiling assembly equivalent to 1/2 -inch plasterboard will be used. If discharging drains to floor drains inside the building, the floor drain should be capable of accepting the full discharge of the main drain and test pipe when fully open. Recommend the replacement of butterfly control valves with indicating gate valves with unobstructed waterways which are listed and labeled by UL for fire service. 12. Extend sprinkler protection to all areas including exterior eaves, soffits, canopies, under all stairways, to filter compartments of heating and air conditioning equipment, intermediate levels of storage racks, and to roof skylights. 13.
