The Valley Independent Investigative team (VIIT) is serving as the independent
investigative team for this OIS. VIIT is a multi -agency team made up of investigators from
seven south King County Police Departments (Auburn, Des Moines, Federal Way, Kent,
Renton, Port of Seattle, and Tukwila). As this incident involved the King County Sheriff's
Office, all King County Sheriff's Office staff have been excluded from this VIIT investigation.
On 14 February 2023 King County Sheriff's Office personnel working in Burien responded to
reports of a subject in traffic. First responding unit's contacted the subject who was
confrontational during the initial contact. Additional units were requested and responded to
assist. Eventually the subject continued moving through traffic along 1st Ave South ignoring
the commands of on -scene KCSO Deputies. Attempts to detain the subject using de-
escalation techniques and less -lethal force options were unsuccessful. Eventually the
subject became increasingly aggressive with KCSO Deputies on -scene causing KCSO
Deputies on -scene to respond with lethal force.
Following the discharge of their duty weapons, KCSO Deputies rendered aid to the subject,
with local Fire Department personnel and King County Medic One personnel eventually
responding to assist. The involved subject was transported to a local hospital for additional
follow-on care.
Additional media releases will be shared at least weekly in accordance with WAC 132-12.
Per Chapter 139-12 WAC, please note that information regarding any officer involved
shooting cannot be released by an independent investigation team without first notifying the
non -law enforcement community representative assigned to the investigation and the family
liaison of the involved subject. VIIT will endeavor to incorporate questions received from the
media into subsequent press releases.
