Idle Pallets: It was determined that the existing system has sufficient capacity to protect idle pallets up to 8 feet in height anywhere in the warehouse. Storage of idle pallets above 8 ft, but no more than 12 feet in height is permitted where stored in a hydraulically more efficient area of the warehouse, e.g. where fire sprinkler branch lines are supplied by the 8 -inch main. The attached calculation represents a remote area located closer to the system riser and above the current location of idle pallets. Refer to as -built record drawings that show the supply main reducing in size as it extends away from the system riser. Concentrating the storage of idle pallets near the 8 -inch main will ensure adequate sprinkler protection is provided. Note that the existing system cannot support storage of idle pallets over 12 feet in height. Class 11 Commodities: It was also determined that the existing system has sufficient capacity for storage configurations utilizing 4 -foot aisles. Combustible Liquids: It was determined that the existing system has sufficient capacity to protect Class IIIA and IIIB combustible liquids in metal relieving -style containers. Class IIIA liquids are permitted to be stored up to 5 feet in height; Class IIIB liquids are limited to 18 feet in height. Where palletized drums are stacked, the pressure -relieving mechanism shall be unobstructed. Note that rack storage of liquids is prohibited without in -rack sprinklers. Flammable and Combustible Liquids: It was determined that the existing system has sufficient capacity to protect small amounts of flammable and combustible liquids stored on shelves in small plastic containers (less than 1 -gallon capacity). Note that rack storage is prohibited. Veltre Engineering, Inc. recommends the following: 1. Reduce overall height of stored commodities on racks as noted, see attached. 2. Maintain clear and unobstructed 4 -foot aisles. Where solid-piled/palletized storage is located within aisles, ensure a minimum of 4 feet clearance is provided between the stored commodity and the rack storage. Avoid shielding higher hazards within the racks. Racks used to store Group A Plastics are limited to 20 -foot storage. Mixing of commodities within the racks is acceptable. However, commodities of lower classifications (e.g., cardboard flats) should not be stored above Group A Plastics. 6. Locate small quantity containers of flammable and combustible liquids (e.g., lemon extract) on shelves. Storage of liquids on racks is prohibited. 7. Maintain storage of palletized Class IIIA combustible liquids (e.g., olive oil) no more than 5 feet in height. 8.
