On February 26, 1990 we received five soil samples for analysis of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes, ethanol, n -propanol, and metals from Scott Brown of Lee Morse General Contractor. These samples were for closure of a pit subsequent to the removal of a tank. Ethanol, propanol, and some aromatic hydrocarbons were detected in some of the samples and potentially elevated levels of chromium, copper, and lead were found in the samples taken from the pit sides. Because of the potential for metals contamination, on March 13, 1990 you requested that we run the sample taken from the sides for EP-Tox metals. This was done and reported on March 28, 1990. At that time no elevated levels of the eight EP -Toxicity metals or copper, nickel, or zinc were found. In April we discussed results of water samples taken on your property and you expressed a desire to confirm results from those investigations by independent sampling and analysis of water from the same well. On May 1, 1990 I came out to your site and we sampled the water from the monitoring well at the South end of your building. After purging the well, I noted that the water contained high levels of fine silt. The water samples were then analyzed for arsenic and chromium (the two metals previously found in these wells) in both filtered and unfiltered sub samples. As reported on May 25, 1990, the unfiltered sample gave comparable results to those found previously in this well (60 ppb 30 ppb arsenic), while the filtered samples ch values and p ppb chromium, and 10 ppb arsenic) below the levelsof(20 FRIEDMAN & BRUYA, ENVIRONMENTAL CHEMISTS copcern. As I said then, given the very high levels of silt in the samples even after purging, the slightly elevated levels found in the sample are most probably in the silt and not in the groundwater. It is my understanding that subsequent sampling at your site has borne out this conclusion. We appreciate this opportunity to be of service to you on this project. The well was purged and subsequently sampled using a hand bailer. Immediately prior to sampling, distilled water was poured into the bailer and then into a liter bottle as a sampling blank. The bailer was then used to collect a one liter sample from the well. Both samples were returned unpreserved to the laboratory and portion filtered prior to analysis. The results clearly indicate that the chromium seen in samples from this well are most likely associated with the high levels of sediment that are found in the water, rather than in the water itself. The same is apparently also true for a large portion of the arsenic found in samples from this well. Neither of these results is unexpected, as sediment deposited in wells is often many orders of magnitude higher in these metals than in surrounding waters. Dear Alan, Having completed the removal of the underground storage tanks as per our contract #12500, we are now providing the paperwork generated during the removal process. Our report from Friedman & Bruya indicates that contamination was not found above the Department of Ecology's detection limit of 660 parts per billion (BTEX). Enclosed you will find this report and any additional information pertaining to that report. Included also, is your proof that the tanks have been removed and scraped in an approved method. Please review the information provided and contact me if you should have any questions. It has been a pleasure being of service to your company. Sincerely, Scott T.
