STRUCTURAL CALCULATIONS FOR RESIDENTIAL DECK RENOVATION
DeJuan Laguerre Residence, Tukwila, Washington
1 General Notes
A) Purpose and Scope:
Tower Engineering Company (TEC) was retained by Dejuan Laguerre to provide engineering analysis
and design services for replacement of an existing exterior deck attached to his residence, located
in Tukwila, Washington (N47° 27' 50.5" W122° 15' 23.3"). Note that the replacement deck has the
same overall dimensions and is located at the same elevation as the existing deck. The purpose of
this analysis is to verify and update the provided deck design as required and produce permitting and
construction drawings. The project scope under this project number includes analysis of the provided
deck design and the production of Deck Replacement Drawings. This calculation package includes
the design criteria, the design inputs and the calculations results.
B) Applicable Codes:
1. NDS: National Design Specification for Wood Construction, latest edition.
2. ASCE: American Society for Civil Engineers, latest edition.
3. IRC: International Residential Code as Amended by King County, latest edition.

STRUCTURAL CALCULATIONS FOR RESIDENTIAL DECK RENOVATION
Dejuan Laguerre Residence, Tukwila, Washington
E) Basis of Design:
The existing deck design was field verified, summarized, and provided to TEC by the home owner,
Dejuan Laguerre. The existing deck design was used as the basis for this analysis and verification
and was updated as required based on the calculations completed within this package.
The design criteria for this analysis are as stated in Section 1.C). The calculated member capacities
and minimum safety factors used to evaluate the adequacy of the structure are developed from the
current version of the design standards listed in Sections 1.B) and 1.C).
Design was completed within Microsoft Excel and included calculations for the bending, shear and
deflection checks of all bending members, buckling checks for the primary support post, as well as
verifying the seismic base shear is less than the minimum lateral load capacity required per IRC
R507.2.4. See Section 2 for a summary of the calculations completed and see Section 3 for a hand
verification of the spreadsheet for the primary girder and the handrail post; other member designs
are similar in Excel.
