Background Project Title: Existing Convenience Store Upgrade, 14413 Tukwila International Blvd. Tukwila, WA 98168 The project is a commercial building remodel approved for construction in 2015. Additional area was created by adding an 8-foot addition to the rear of the building. That work, along with the over -toping the existing sloped roof with a new flat -truss roof, was substantially completed in 2015. General interior remodeling was also done, along with kitchen, electrical, plumbing and mechanical upgrades. The original building, which is substantially still in place, was a pre -fabricated gas/service station panel building constructed in the 1960's. It had the shallow sloped roof pattern. The purpose of the remodel was to add floor space for storage and to architecturally create an updated roof line for the building With the project substantially complete, this office prepared a roof structure evaluation for the first roof unit, a Daiken 5-Ton HVAC unit in 2015. (This evaluation is included in this report, with no changes needed.) Since that time, several smaller roof -mounted units have been installed on the roof. This evaluation will document and evaluate the effect on the roof trusses of the additional installed roof units. Each unit is evaluated separately below. Unit weight and location within the truss system varies, and can have significant overloading if not evaluated, 2. Evaluation of Unit Attachment to Roof Sheathing All units are attached directly to roof sheathing (7/16" OSB). Used were the integral bottom flanges of the various units. Attachment consisted of typically #10 x 2" (+/-) deck screws at 12" spacing or less. Reference Corps of Engineers FM5-34: Shear capacity #10 screws P = 96.93# (See attached calc's) Check "worst" case: Daiken HVAC unit — Weight = 620# Add 15% for additional attachments Adjusted weight = 713# Critical loading is seismic - Good conservative estimate is P-Iateral = 20% wt. P-Iateral = 143# Approximate Unit Perimeter (at base) = (4' + 6') x 2 = 20 linear feet Therefore, about 20 screws at 12" spacing. Therefore, P-capacity = 20 x 96.93 1,939# >> 143# Therefore: OKAY rreLo MANUAL ho. 5-34 ' HEADQUARTERS DEPARTMENT OF THE ARMY Washington, D.C., 24 September 1976 ENGINEER FIELD DATA Paragraph Page CHAPTER 1, INTRODUCTION Section I. The 36" high trusses consist of top and bottom vertical 2" x 4"s (assumed DF-Select) with 2" x 4" diagonal webbing. They were commercially manufactured. The calculated moment capacity of the trusses is 56,910 ft Ibs/4 trusses (in orig. calcs) = 14,227.5 ft Ibs (These calculations are an extract from 2015 calculations.) Dec. Model FBD-RC (Work with interior 37X Frozen Beverage Dispensers) These two smaller units are comprised of heat exchange coils and fans. They are small and light. There estimated weight is less than 100# each. Their location is close to mid -span of the 36' span in their location. A separate truss calculation is done for the two units, South and North Units. The reason is that the South Unit shares a double truss with the HVAC Unit D. The North Unit shares a single truss with Compressor Unit E. Summary: For both unit installations, the added unit weight is within truss capacity. Make-up Air Fan Unit (Kitchen) Econ-Air - Model E76 (EA-A-1-150) This unit is the kitchen make-up air unit. It is of moderate weight. It has a total estimated weight of 300# (with assumed heater). This estimate is conservative. Its location is where truss span is 28 feet. This unit shares a truss with the Kitchen Exhaust Fan Unit C. Note that for this unit and the Unit C, the moment for each is computed, but added to the normal roof truss loading at an assumed mid -span. This is conservative. Units are designed for natural and propane gas applications, and for indoor mroutdoor inoteUation.. Direct Gas -Fired Heater, for use /n tempering make-up air. Packages are certified to the ANSI Z83'4—Second Edition and CSA 3.7_2086 combined safety standards. One size is available with a max BTU rate of241,2gOand 1,800 CFM. Units are designed for natural or propane applications and are rated for indoor/outdoor installations in commercial occupancies. A unique feature is the self-adjusting burner profile plates allowing 2-speed and variable -air -volume applications. The plates ensure proper air velocity and pressure drop across the burner for clean combustion. Spring -loaded profile plates react to the momentum of the fresh air stream, therefore, no motors or actuators are needed to drive them, nor dothey need to be manually set to a specific position. Standard features Include intermittent spark ignition system with timed safety lockout, and redundant gas valves. Units consist of a galvanized enclosure with an elevated gas burner which burns directly In the air stream. The burner consists of non -clogging, stainless steel combustion baffles attached to a cast iron gas supply section. The burner Is capable of nearly 10096 thermal efficiency with m maximum turndown ratio of 15 to 1. The products of combustion mix with the make-up air which is Introduced Into the heater Intake directly from outside the building. The burner module has standard horizontal inlet and discharge duct connection and Is located upstream of the blower. The heater has a standard horizontal Inlet designed to accommodate anoutside air Inlet hood With standard 2"filter and scneen. Tosatisfy avariety ofinstallation requirements, packages are available |nanumber ofconfigurations which include additions of filtered intake with easy access door and a trunkline that is used to move the air intake away from the grease laden exhaust air. Screened intakes are used to stop debris from being pulled in to the heater. The screened intake attaches directly to the filtered intake or the trunk||nm. Combination packages that include both exhaust and supply fans mounted on a single roof curb are also available, p|aaaa contact your sales representative for more information. Calculations for its roof installation were prepared in 2015 for its original installation. Attached are a copy of those calculations. No changes are necessary. Note that one of the beverage cooler fan units shares part of the truss loading for this major unit. See evaluation for Unit A (South) which verifies that the combined loading is acceptable at that location. Summary: For this unit installation, the added unit weight is within truss capacity. No changes or remedial measures are required. Additional Note: While not considered in the calculations, as directly observed (in the attic space visits) the two pairs of double trusses supporting this unit actually rest on the sloping sides of the original roof in its front -to -back portion. Thus, these two truss pairs have undocumented but almost complete underlying support along most of their length. This makes the evaluation of units supported by the double trusses very conservative.
