Commissioners shared something about themselves. • City of Tukwila Board & Commissions Equity Training Planning The training scheduled on Saturday, October 7 was cancelled due to facilitator illness. The Commissioners decided to reschedule the training in 2024 when new members are on board and requested a rollover of 2023 funds for this purpose. This also prompted a • Racial Restrictive Covenants Project Presentation (Pending Confirmation) Jo Anderson provided an update that the research team representative was not available to present at this meeting but could possibly present at the November 2 meeting. • Equitable Development Discussion Continued Tukwila Equity and Social Justice Commission City of Tukwila — City Hall 6200 Southcenter Boulevard, Tukwila, WA 98188 The Commissioners discussed shared concerns and ideas, which includes, but is not limited to the following: • Plan for the needs of community members that are most impacted by systemic and structural inequities. Wealthier areas are protected from rezoning, while disenfranchised areas are targets for displacement. • Commit to being community- and data -driven, and not driven by those most resourced or connected. • Distribute resources to increase equality. Balance who unfairly gains/benefits from current policies and practices and who is unfairly disadvantaged/burdened. • Find creative, equitable solutions for zoning, parking, transportation that allows the to grow out as well as up. • Prioritize affordable housing. This includes taking a closer look at what is deemed affordable and by whom. • Value and preserve the cultural centers, businesses, and organizations that make Tukwila unique. • Caution against comparisons to Seattle or following the same policies and practices. These have lead to further gentrification and closure of cultural institutions. • View sustainability through an equity lens. Recognize that sustainability and equity can work together. Solutions mostly cater to middle -upper income ideas of sustainability. Not everyone can afford electric cars or can go without. • Preserve and expand green spaces and tree canopies. • Increase safety, cleanliness, and accessibility of public spaces. VI Miscellaneous • Jo Anderson reported that a request was submitted to Tukwila TIS to create a SharePoint page for ESJC documents.
