The meeting was held in the Tukwila City Hall at 2:00 p.m. today for the
purpose of allowing the State Highway Department to present to the Tukwila City
Council and affected property owners proposed plans for the improvement of
Interurban Avenue South within the Tukwila City Limits.
The meeting was attended by Council members, Tom Forsythe, Dwight Gardner,
Helen Nelsen and Larry Popejoy. Also present were State Representative Avery Garrett
and Mr. John Richardson of the Joint Legislative Committee for Highways,
Mr. W. E. Foster and five members of his staff presented the following plans:
1. Interurban Avenue will be constructed with four traffic lanes with a fifth lane
to be utilized for channelization of left turns and strategically located U -Turn
facilities from the North border of the City extending South to the Highway 405
Interchange, A formal proposal, complete with design maps will be forwarded to the
City Council prior to the next meeting scheduled for December 18, 1967.
There were no negative comments from affected property owners concerning the
North portion of the proposal. It is apparent that the South portion is unacceptable
to the affected property owners. It is estimated that the U- Turn at South 143rd Street
will be re- located one block South to South 1l3rd Place to facilitate industrial
development in the area.
The Street Committee will review the Highway Department proposal and present
it to the Council as a whole for council action in the near future,
