PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, nationwide, up to 35% of all food produced is thrown away rather than
eaten; and
WHEREAS, Washington generates an estimated 1.1 million tons of food waste
annually, including 400,000 tons of edible food disposed in the landfill; and
WHEREAS, wasting food also wastes water, energy, labor, pesticides, fertilizers, and
land used to make and transport the food; and
WHEREAS, reducing food waste will also reduce greenhouse gas emissions; and
WHEREAS, safe and nutritious food that is currently thrown away could instead feed
hungry people; and
WHEREAS, a family of four can save an average of $1,800 each year, by avoiding
purchasing food that is not eaten and then becomes food waste; and
WHEREAS, the Tukwila Food Pantry is a local organization actively engaged in food
waste prevention work and supports Food Waste Prevention Week; and
NOW THEREFORE, I, Thomas McLeod, Mayor of the City of Tukwila, do hereby
proclaim April 1- 7 as:
Food Waste Prevention Week
in the City of Tukwila and encourage all community residents to join me in
recognizing this special observance.
