Beach Front near 7th Place S, Des Moines, WA
The Valley Independent Investigative team (VIIT) is serving as the independent investigative
team for this OIS. VIIT is a multi -agency team made up of investigators from seven south King
County Police Depaitiiients (Auburn, Des Moines, Federal Way, Kent, Renton, Port of Seattle,
Tukwila and the King County Sheriff's Office). As this incident involved officers from the Kent
Police Department assisting Des Moines Police Department personnel, investigators from both
Des Moines and Kent Police Departments have been excluded from this investigation.
On 14 February 2025 at approx. 1627HRS Des Moines Police Department personnel were
dispatched to a residence in 27000 block of 10th Ave S for a domestic dispute involving a
firearm. The victims were able to escape the home to a neighboring residence before Des
Moines Patrol units arrived. Patrol units attempted to contact the male suspect and learned that
he had fled before units arrived. He was located a short time later on the beach near 7th Place S.
Officers approached the suspect on the beach giving verbal commands attempting to take him
into custody without incident. The suspect was advised he was under arrest and ignored verbal
commands to keep his hands out of his pockets. During the incident a Kent Police officer fired
their duty weapon injuring the suspect. Following the use of force, officers provided first aid for
his injuries and took the suspect into custody. Care was transferred to Fire Department personnel
upon their arrival before he was transported to Harborview Medical Center for additional care.
Involved officers have been placed on administrative leave, per department policy. The Valley
Independent Investigation Team (VIIT) responded and is investigating the incident. VIIT will be
the media point of contact for further information.
Per Chapter 139-12 WAC, please note that information regarding any officer involved shooting
cannot be released by an independent investigation team without first notifying the family liaison
and the non -law enforcement community representative assigned to the investigation. VIIT will
endeavor to incorporate questions received from the media into subsequent press releases.
