Lastly, a friend and I have established a new non-profit art organization based in Tukwila Otter & Penguin Makerspaces. We started Otter & Penguin Makerspaces to fuel our passion in developing and maintaining creative spaces in support of the arts. Our purpose is to build an environment of inclusivity where people can collaborate, learn, experiment, and create. Our programs and spaces are open to everyone of all skill levels, ages, and cultures. (Please limit your response to 500 words or less.) I've served on the Equity and Social Justice Commission for years, first as a councilmember and then as a resident. I would like you to consider moving me to another commission, where I can bring my ESJ experience with me. Two other committees of interest to me are: Human Services: I've worked with Stacy Hansen as a councilmember, and as a resident, on human services issues. I have been advocating those needing service and assistance since my high school days, when I served as a student representative to the Renton Area Youth Services board of directors. I continue my concern and interest in those needing help in the region. I am somewhat familiar with the process of vetting Human Services grant requests due to my time on the council. It would be an honor to serve on this board. Parks: I am an outdoorsy person and have enjoyed spending time in the parks in Tukwila since my family moved here in 1993. I was happy to have so many parks nearby when I was raising my three boys. I am familiar with the Parks District, having been one of the decision makers in its formation. I've also been involved in restoration projects over the years, mostly in the creation of Codiga and Duwamish Hill Parks. I would like to bring with me an informal connection between this commission and the Equity and Social Justice Commission. It would be fun and interesting to serve on this board. Equity and Social Justice: I also could continue to serve on the ESJ commission. As a long-time member, I bring continuity and knowledge of city policies and practices to the group. I am always learning new things from fellow commissioners and guests. My experiences on the committee have allowed me to bring greater awareness and understanding when advocating for the BIPOC community. (Please limit your response to 500 words or less.) I have spent all 28 years of my life in Tukwila. From my time as an elementary student at Cascade to being part of the 100th graduating class at the city's only high school, Tukwila has been central to many pivotal moments in my life. Over these 28 years, I have witnessed this small yet vibrant city evolve in remarkable ways. For my first year of college, I made the drive over the mountains to attend Whitworth University. That year in Spokane taught me just how much of a blessing it is to call Tukwila home. Living away from one of the most diverse and emerging cities in Washington gave me a deeper appreciation for everything this community represents —something I no longer take for granted. After just one year, I knew I needed to return to Tukwila, a place like no other, to be closer to my family, closer to home. My desire to serve on the Human Services Advisory Board for the City of Tukwila stems from a deep sense of gratitude and a commitment to giving back to a community that has given me so much. I have seen Tukwila grow and change, yet it remains a place that opens its doors to people of all ages, backgrounds, languages, and religions. As the needs of those who call Tukwila home —or even those just passing through —continue to increase, it is crucial that we work together to address those challenges. I understand that the ratio of resources to community needs is a challenge faced by many cities in South King County. However, I also know that Tukwila is unique in its resilience, diversity, and potential. While I don't claim to have all the answers, I bring a valuable perspective as a second -generation daughter of immigrants who chose Tukwila as their home away from home. As a former Tukwila School District student, a bilingual first -generation Latina woman, and someone deeply rooted in this community, I hope to share my lived experiences to help assess and address the needs of residents from all walks of life. Serving on this board would be an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to a city that has shaped who I am today. This allows me to serve the community and coordinate programs that not only provide resources, but also bring joy to the community I serve. As a former teacher I truly enjoy working with young people so now that I am no longer in the classroom, I spend part of my time facilitating our Sunday youth group meetings. When I am not with community, I balance my time alone by prioritizing my overall health through weightlifting, long distance runs, fitness challenges, and long walks with my two dogs. I have been a long time participant and fan of local parks and recreation services, and am applying for this open resident position to further my support and better my community. I find one of the best ways to get to know a city is to visit its parks, and so when I moved here I decided to run to all of our parks in a single day (I'm a runner). I found our parks to be a delightful combination of urban activity centers and ecological wonders, rich in native history. One of my favorites was the Duwamish Hill Preserve, and so when the opportunity arose I joined the "Friends of the Hill" steward group, and have been a member for a year and a half. I'm also a member of the Tukwila Community Center's fitness room and classes, as well as the Tukwila Pool (a big fan of both!). From my participation in Tukwila's parks and recreation groups, I've come to appreciate just how important they are to our community and I want to ensure that they continue to grow and flourish for all of our residents for years to come. I am eager to learn more about the Parks Department's ideas for improving our communities and how I can help them achieve them. I'm also eager to share my own ideas and do what I can to make sure our parks continue to be a place: - where all Tukwila residents can feel safe and welcome -where people of all ages and backgrounds can make friends and create memories - for community engagement and celebration - for learning and disocvery of our natural world and cultural diversity While I don't have a formal educational background in city planning or environmental science, my profession does involve a lot of strategic planning and budget creation/management.
