Mayor's Message
Laying the foundation
for our City's future
Local government has many roles. We provide direct services
that residents and visitors can see and interact with every day,
like recreational programming, police in our neighborhoods
and roadways being refurbished. There's a lot of other work
that goes on behind the scenes, such as providing graphic
design for the Hazelnut, processing utility bills, and preparing
weekly meeting packets for the City Council.
Then there are the projects and programs that are the in-
between - the important things we do as a City to plan for our
future. I call these our foundational projects, with the biennial
budget process being at the top of the list. There are many
more foundational projects currently underway that, over the
coming years, will help shape our community. I encourage
you to learn more about our work and engage with these
important projects. These are just a few.
Comprehensive Plan and Middle Housing -
Every ten years cities are required to develop a Comprehensive
Plan. This policy document describes how the City will
manage its growth, and provide necessary services and
facilities over a 20-year planning period. It literally lays out
how we want to grow as our population increases, what
types of housing we want to encourage, how we will address
climate change, community resilience and more. This
Comprehensive Plan will also focus on how we can encourage
the development of affordable housing that addresses the
needs of all Tukwila's families. Over the next 18 months, City
staff will conduct a robust community engagement process to
get your input on the plan's priorities. Join us in this effort by
visiting TukwilaWA.gov/CompPlanUpdate.
Tukwila Police Department Strategic Plan -
The Strategic Plan Committee consists of employees from
all divisions within the Tukwila Police Department plus
two Tukwila community members. So far this year, Chief
Eric Dreyer has hosted three Committee meetings. The
Department recently employed a consultant to facilitate the
meetings and help develop a quality product. Their mission
is to develop goals that are measurable and achievable over
the next five years. The Department will also seek to revamp
its vision, mission, and core values. The committee's target
is having a completed 2024-2028 Strategic Plan by the end
of 2023. Critical to this process is community engagement.
Our success in this plan requires your input and feedback via
social media, town hall, one on one, surveys, etc. Tukwila
community members are encouraged to connect with the
Department on this important effort. For updates, visit
TukwilaPolice.com and Facebook.com/TukwilaPD.
Allentown Truck Reroute Project -
You may be aware that the City is developing an Environmental
Impact Statement (EIS). It evaluates alternatives for rerouting
existing BNSF Railway truck traffic in Allentown. As of this
writing, the City just completed Phase 2 of its scoping efforts.
This is where information is received from the Tukwila
community and other stakeholders about potential route
alternatives in and out of the BNSF Railway intermodal
yard. The project has moved to the drafting phase, where
input received in Phase 2 is used to determine the final set
of alternatives for analysis in the Draft EIS. This part of the
effort takes approximately nine months. When complete,
the Draft EIS will be available for review and comment
by the community and other stakeholdera before the EIS
is finalized. For more information, visit TukwilaWA.gov/
AllentownTruckReroute.
These are just some of critical programs currently under way
that will have lasting impacts on our city. I encourage you
to get involved in the Tukwila community, partner with us in
some capacity, and help continue to improve our great city.

THE HAZELNUT
June is Pet Preparedness Month... Are you "petpared"?
Surveys show that most households in the United States have
at least one pet. Your pet is a critical member of your family
and needs to be included in your emergency plan. Follow
these simple steps to become "petpared" for anything!
Build a Kit
Your pet needs a basic kit with their own supplies that you can
grab and go at a moment's notice. Here are some items you
may want to include in your pet emergency kit:
OS
W FOOD - Keep enough food for several days in a sealed
container.
WATER - Add a few bottles of water to your pet's kit.
MEDICINE - Keep an extra supply of your pet's medication
in a waterproof container.
COLLAR, LEASH, HARNESS, ID TAG - Add a backup leash,
collar, ID tag and harness to your kit.
PET DOCUMENTATION - Keep a list of medications, pet
registration, chip information, etc., in your kit.
GROOMING SUPPLIES - Keep a small bottle of pet
shampoo and other grooming items in case your pet needs
cleaning up.
SANITATION - Include newspaper, paper towels, pet litter,
for your pet's sanitation needs.
PHOTOS - If you and your pet become separated, a photo
of you and your will help prove ownership and allow others
to assist you in identifying your pet.
FAMILIAR ITEMS - Include favorite toys, treats, bedding,
and other items that will help reduce stress for your pet.
Make a Plan
Depending on the emergency or disaster, time of day, day of
the week, and several other factors, you may or may not be
home with your pet. A plan for all situations will help you and
your pet stay together or be reunited quickly. Arrange to:
` V* HAVE AN EVACUATION PLAN for your pet. Many shelters
and hotels don't allow pets. Know where you can take your
pet before a disaster. Use resources like BringFido.com to
make your plan.
CREATE A BUDDY SYSTEM. Talk with neighbors, friends and
family to make sure someone can retrieve your pet if you
are not home.
0$ MICROCHIP YOUR PET. Keep your contact information on
the chip up to date. Include an emergency contact outside
of your immediate area. Microchips will be one of the first
things used to identify and reunite pets with their owners.
Be Informed
Staying informed is important for you, your family, and your
furry or feathered friends. Ways to stay informed:
PAY ATTENTION to emergency alerts and warnings. Follow
the warning instructions to keep you and your pet safe.
ALWAYS BRING PETS INDOORS at the first sign or warning
of a storm or inclement weather.
For more information or questions about pet preparedness,
contact Tukwila Emergency Management at EmergencyPrep@
TukwilaWA.gov.
Tukwila Pool feasibility study - your input is invited
To identify community needs and analyze sustainability, the
Tukwila Pool Metropolitan Park District (TPMPD) will conduct
a feasibility study. Expected to be completed later this year,
the study will be funded by a $100,000 Parks Aquatic Facilities
Program Grant awarded to the TPMPD from King County.
The Tukwila Pool is a year-round indoor facility with a twenty-
five -yard, six lane lap pool and a shallow pool that supports
various aquatic activities. The focus of the feasibility study is to
ensure that the Tukwila Pool is able
to meet the community's needs now
and in the future. The feasibility
study includes needs and operational
feLi; "T cost analysis and funding strategy.
DISTRI
CT
TUKWILA
POOL
TRROOP)OLITAN PARK
The Tukwila Pool participants consistently express needs
and interests for additional aquatic programming; the
demand for aquatic spaces is an ongoing challenge
throughout the region.
Public input is important to the study. The TPMPD invites
all interested Tukwila residents to participate in the
conversation, along with input from others who participate
in Tukwila Pool programs, including residents of SeaTac,
Burien, Renton and Seattle.
A calendar of events related to the feasibility study will be
published on the Tukwila Pool website TukwilaPooLorg. For
more information, contact District Administrator Kristine
Selleck at 206-556-3055, or email district@TukwilaPool.org.

What it does
Tukwila's Planning Commission also sits as the City's Board of
Architectural Review.
The role of the Planning Commission is to promote and
coordinate comprehensive long-range planning, growth

attend public meetings with minimal absences. Generally, the
Planning Commission meets on the fourth Thursday of each
month (2nd Thursday in November and December) at 6:30PM,
but during times of heavy workloads one or two additional
evening meetings may be scheduled per month.
All meetings are hybrid meetings, held in -person and
virtually, in the City Council Chambers. The meetings are
recorded. A record of Planning Commission agendas and
board activities can be found on the City website in the
Digital Records Center.
All applicants for this position must live in the City of Tukwila.

4 THE HAZELNUT
Council Corner
Tukwila's Council stays busy working with a variety of issues
Your City Council has been hard at work these past couple of
months, and I want to take an opportunity to provide you with
some highlights of what we've been up to!
City Council Retreat: Improving the way we work together
Every year the City Council gets together fora retreat
and this year we focused on improving the way we work
together. This is important because we must find common
ground for decision making. It is equally important that
Council members have good working relationships with the
mayor, City administration and City staff. As a result of the
retreat, we have developed draft agreements to help foster
collaborative, equitable and respectful work.
Public Works Shops Phase 2:
Supporting the foundation of our City
The City Council has been working with City Administration
to continue the progress on a new Public Works facility.
Tukwila's Public Works Department is responsible for
the most critical infrastructure in our city - roads, water
systems, sewer systems, environmental protections, and
all things related to our City's infrastructure. Currently,
our public works shops are deteriorating, and we cannot
risk losing this critical resource. The Council is considering
design and construction financing at this time.
South King County Housing and Homelessness Partnership
(SKHHP): Regional collaboration on affordable housing
Tukwila is a member of SKHHP, which focuses on housing
solutions in South King County. Other members are the
cities of Renton, Federal Way, Kent, Auburn, Des Moines,
Maple Valley and Covington. The City Council recently
voted to increase Tukwila's contribution to SKHHP's Capital
Housing Fund so that more projects across the region can
get the funding they need to begin.
by Cynthia Delostrinos-Johnson,
2023 Council President
Improving Public Safety: Automated license plate readers
The Council recently approved a contract for automated
license plate readers that serve as a tool to help the Tukwila
Police Department combat car thefts and other crime
within the city.
Tukwila's City of Opportunity Scholarships awarded
Every year, the City provides $10,000 in scholarship awards
to graduating seniors living in Tukwila. This year four
scholarships were awarded to seniors from Foster High
School.
Providing a Public Health Response to Safety:
Mental health co -responders
The Council approved contracts to add another Mental
Health Provider to the Tukwila Police Department. The
Mental Health Providers are deployed as co -responders
assisting police officers on calls that involve individuals
suffering from mental illness. The co -responders also
provide training for officers to improve the Department's
mental health response.
We want to hear from you! Are the decisions we are making
reflecting the values and vision you see in Tukwila? Please let
us know! Email us at CityCouncil@TukwilaWA.gov, or stop by
our public meetings on Monday evenings at 7:00PM at City Hall,
located at 6200 Southcenter Boulevard.
